OMAWUMI: ‘Why I Don’t Discuss The Paternity of My Daughter’
Nigerian music Diva, Omawumi Megbele is as interesting as her music. Judging from when she made her debut till date, she has not stopped thrilling her fans with her mind-blowing and soul-stirring songs. In this interview with Seun Apara, Omawumi talks about her music, her endorsements, her personal life, amongst other issues.
Basically, what will you say you enjoy most about your recent endorsements?
With regards to each of the brand, when Mortein approached me, I was very happy because the work has a message as a spokesperson for the anti-malaria campaign. It gave me so much joy to be able to go round to educate and empower women. When it came to GLO, I just felt that it was the right thing to do as at that time because it all goes to show that they appreciate my work. They've seen what I'm doing and they want to associate with me which is a fantastic thing. For Konga.com, it just came up and it’s like I can market almost every product because I have an online presence and is just overwhelming. Sometimes when I sit down and think about all of this, I would be like ‘se na me be dis’? I'm hopeful there are more to come. I don't know how or when but I'm sure more is coming.
What will you attribute as the secret of your success?
God is the overall factor and the rest are accessibility and relativity. I understand that it’s very easy to get carried away because of the razzmatazz that comes with the job but I'm a human being and I'm open to issues, mistakes, hurts and happiness like everybody else. Though some people behave like demigods because they are popular and they make themselves not reachable but I can't sell myself like that because that's not who I am. Also, the level of my education also comes into play. I understand that my work is business and I treat it as such, that's why it’s called show business. So I tried as much as possible to handle it in a business manner and there is progress.
What is your take on controversy?
Everybody has one controversy or the other but because I'm an artiste, everybody gets to hear my own. I feel it’s inevitable but we have to be more careful about people's feelings because most time, what they write about you is not true. When somebody forms an opinion about you and you try to write a retraction, there is no way you won't write the story again. I try not to bother myself with all the stories because it’s part of the job.
Why is that you don’t like discussing the paternity of your daughter?
I never hid it but I felt that since I'm not married, I don't need to come out and say this is the father of my child. It is always ideal for someone who wants to marry you to be the one to identify himself. Another thing is that he might not want to identify himself because he is not an artiste. He might not want that part of my life. He might just love me and my child. So I like to respect people's privacy. I also strongly feel that it is my job as a musician to entertain you and if you feel like my personal life is your business, it doesn't mean I feel the same way.
Initially when I got pregnant, I didn't feel the need to come out and start telling people that this is the father of my child. I didn't feel I owed it to anyone. My family and my close friends know who the father of my child is because we’re in a relationship. We have a very healthy relationship and our families are intertwined. I don't think I need to start telling people all this.
I felt so bad about the stories people are writing about my child's paternity because normally, controversies don't get to me and my daughter don’t have to be part of this. So when people start putting that kind of stuffs in print and my daughter stumbles upon it when she is old enough to read, it will hurt her.
Considering the kind of upbringing I had, I'm not that morally bankrupt that I will now fraternize with a married man that is like a father figure to me.
You want to reveal his identity?
I don't feel that will be necessary. I just want to use this opportunity to tell people that I will try as much as possible to be a normal artiste and I want to encourage people to try and enjoy my music. It’s not easy but they should just try not to be concerned about my private life. They should know that I'm a human being and they should try to understand that I tried to be a person that people can look up to.
What do you consider as your greatest challenge ever in your career?
I face challenges almost everyday of my life, it’s part of the things you need to succeed. I'm not one of those people that will say these challenges are too difficult; this industry is male dominated and all that. I believe if you work hard, your music will sell. Whether you are a man or woman, if you do what you need to do to be recognized, you will be recognized.
What is your impression about the state of your industry?
I like to be optimistic about things and I believe that we are progressing. I'm really proud to be part of this music industry. When they call people's name in the history of the Nigerian Music Industry, they will call my name too and that is an achievement. Though there are some challenges the industry is still facing like marketing, piracy e.t.c. For me, I think we are getting more organized and we now have societies that are accountable, so things are going on well. We are moving towards perfection. We are also partnering with international artistes and our music is now recognized internationally.
What are the things you would love to do differently?
I will try to be more acceptable. These days, I don't have patience, though I know patience is a virtue but I have to be more patient and that is the major thing I'm praying for now. Aside from that, I wouldn't change anything. I'm just grateful to my fans, friends and even those who try to stop me.
How has been the reception of latest album?
So far, the reception is overwhelming. The marketers told me that the first 300,000 copies they printed have already been sold out. The album is selling madly across Africa. There are people who told me they saw my album in kenya and it’s really fantastic.
How soon will you have a label mate on your independent label, OMA Records?
We've been looking around scouting for talent and I'm very happy to say that we have found someone. We are trying to do a proper grooming and preparation before signing her. We have other businesses as well outside music. We write theme songs and commercials for interested clients. We bring up a concept and we write songs surrounding such concept.
What do you we expect next?
I want to partner with one or two people to start mentoring young girls, like having a conversation with them because there are lot of young girls who are disoriented, who are in the bandwagon of getting rich quickly and not bothering about the danger that come with such a thing. That is the next project I'm working on. I also have two videos to shoot. I just finished shooting one half of it in New York City and ready to shoot the other half in Nigeria.

"I WILL BACK MY DAUGHTER AND SELL TOMATOES" SAYS OMAWUMI ON RUBBIN' MINDS

It was a delightful session with pop star, Omawumi Megbele in the last episode of Rubbin' Minds, as host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu tackled her on issues regarding her personal life, career, motherhood, upcoming concert and other hot topics.
Megbele spoke about her upcoming concert, ‘Lasso of Truth’, which she said will be a mixture of fun, variety of emotions and soulful performances.
Not leaving behind what she referred to as the most important thing in her life, her daughter, Omawumi stated that no matter what becomes of her career, she will always make a way for her daughter.
Obi-Uchendu steps up talk-TV with this one. Watch the video below:
Omawumi Explains Bottom Belle & Kokoma as She Drops Stay Alive
One of Nigeria’s prolific singers, Omawumi is no doubt doing well in her chosen career and doing Nigeria proud. Not relenting on her oars after the great success recorded by her last single, Bottom Belle, the singer spoke exclusively to Seun Apara few days back concerning her oncoming new single that will dropping before the end this month, her performance at the CAF event and meanings of Kokoma & Bottom Belle that has caused heated arguments in different quarters.
What should be our expectations regarding the new single you are about to drop?
I have always been very unpredictable. I at all times put out what marvels the people. The way to do it with our music industry is that when you release a single, you release another single that sounds like the first one, so that the leverage that you have from the first one will carry on, but that's not my style. My style is to make good music because I am a music lover. Anytime I enter the studio, I deliver anything that comes to my head as long as it is good music. That's how I have always being. Now that people have heard 'bottom belle', don't expect to hear another highlife song because before 'Bottom Belle', you heard a 70's classic song called 'If You Ask Me'. So if you are expecting to hear something like Bottom Belle, I'm sorry because it is something totally different.
What do you intend to achieve with the new single?
Well, my new track called 'Stay Alive’ (Jeje Laye) is still a build up to my second album, but what I hope to achieve from it is the gospel of the music, what I am saying in the song. What I am saying in the song is you need to just relax and take things easy because some people don't. Every day, you see people trying to acquire wealth or get to a level where they can forget their troubles. But the thing about it is that you just need to slow down a little. As long as you have the basic requirements of the three square meals, try to stay alive and be concerned about your well being before you concentrate on acquiring wealth.
What is the title of your track?
What could you remember from your recent performance in South-Africa?
It was a fantastic opportunity and I didn't believe that I will get that kind of leverage that I got. I performed alongside Mafiki Solo, a very big band in South Africa. I admire their music and for me to have the opportunity to perform on stage with them, is a big thing for me. I remember I used to save 1,500naira to buy their CD because they don't sell their CDs in the normal market. It was a privilege to me and aside from that, to be able to perform in the presence of the president of South Africa, CAF president and other big shots.
What do you think makes your music different from other artistes?
Well, I think it has to do with God. I can't attribute anything to myself. Sometimes, I might wake up and tell you this is how I'll do my music to come out good, but I realize it doesn't have anything to do with me. It is just the hand of God in my life because I am not the best vocalist in the world nor in my country but when I come out and I sing, there is a kind of respect and acknowledgement that I get. My music is relatable, it has nothing to do with me, it’s just the hand of God.
Basically, when are you releasing the album?
I was tempted too by my manager, Mr. Sundeay Are. He was troubling me that I must release an album, but the thing about it is that I feel my fans and listeners deserves a lot more. It is not that he doesn't want the best for me, he does, but I need to be able to bring out something fantastic. All I am begging for is a little time, my album is almost ready. Now it might get to the stage where all the songs in my album are going to come out free of charge, but I just need time to be able to pass the message I need to pass across because they are only like a few channel for people to get my messages or get inspiration. In Nigeria these days, not many people talk about what really happens in real life, now I have the opportunity to do that. So, I need a little bit of time because there is a message I am passing across.

Your videos come with different interpretations, what should we expect from this new one?
I can tell you that it's going to be different. It is just a total interpretation of who I am.
Basically, the word ‘Kokoma’, what does it mean?
I came back from America with my daughter when she was about two and half months or three months. My mum was with me for about four months to take care of the baby. When my mum was with me, I used to sing 'Omawumi's baby, Grandma Warri's baby, Grandma Lekki's baby', and so on. Kokoma is like a drum beat or dance style of highlife that could be related to Ghanaian highlife in the 60's or 70's. When my mum cooks, that's what they sing- 'kokoma, I stand by, Adebisi Konga'. Adebisi konga is the name of a guy that used to play drums, his name was Adebisi, but we call him 'Adebisi Konga'. Then before I released the song, my mum used to sing the song. When the producer of 'Bottom Belle' called me that he's taking the song to Flavour and that he needs me to come out with something different because Flavour will surely bring in his own style. We did it and the song became a hit. Now, a lot of people enjoy the music, from six months to 10 years old. That's satisfaction to me.
What is 'Bottom Belle' itself?
Bottom Belle! I get tired of answering that question because everybody has the idea that it might be the bottom of the belle. The song was originally done by Victor Olaiya. I got ideas from him and a couple of other artistes. Basically, I wrote it in my concept because it was released in the 60's, 70's and then bell bottoms were in vogue. A woman will tell me buy me bottom belle, give me bottom belle to cool my heart. Then the in-thing was bell bottom trouser. So when they tell you give me bottom belle or buy me bottom belle, it means buy me bell bottom trouser, so that I will feel among and be happy. Bottom Belle in my own concept means going the extra mile to make your woman happy.

Breaking News: M.I, Omawumi to Host The Headies 2012
Best-selling singer-songwriter Omawumi Megbele and hip-hop icon Jude 'M.I' Abaga have been announced as hosts for the 7th edition of The Headies - Nigeria's biggest music honours event.

Announcing this today, executive producer Ayo Animashaun says the pair have been selected in line with the awards' tradition of picking talented and inspiring entertainers, to front an awards ceremony that parades some of the continent's biggest entertainers.
“It's a very important year for us at The Headies, and for the Nigerian music industry in general', Animashaun, who founded the awards in 2006 says. “And we found in M.I and Omawumi, two great entertainers who are very passionate about the awards, passionate about their work, passionate about the music business and a great source of inspiration to young, up and coming artistes, because of their peculiar stories climbing up”.
Omawumi, 30, came second on West Africa Idol, in 2007. Her success on that show provided a strong foundation for her career, and she hasn't looked back for a minute. With her debut single ‘In the music' released in 2008, she established herself as a talent to court, and a singer whose eyes are on the global stage. The success of that single, won her the coveted 'Next Rated' prize at The Headies in 2009. The award came with a brand new KIA Optima. Omawumi has moved on to become a remarkably successful singer, actor, performer and philanthropist.
Omawumi's co-host M.I, has risen from grass to grace, in just about half a decade. And, from a Jos-bred wanna -be, who worked hard to find a niche in the hip hop community, M.I has now become the leading rapper and hip hop ambassador on the continent, with many medals to show for his achievements. The Chocolate City rapper is a multiple winner at The Headies, with his prizes including Best Rap Album and Revelation of the year (both in 2009). He has won a total of 9 Headies, starting from his first surprise win in 2008.
'I won my first Headie when no one knew who I was' M.I says. 'It was a big leap for me and my career and I can say the same for a lot of my colleagues. Several years after, I'm excited to be here, performing in a very important capacity, along with my very good friend Omawumi’.
“You know one of the things over the years that have been traditionally so great about the Headies awards is the fact that they do two things well. They merge the aspirational aspect of entertainment with the inspirational aspect of entertainment. You take us to the villages, we meet people where they don’t really have water we’ve done that. At the same time you take people to Brazil. A young person can look and be inspired and also aspire too,” he concluded.

Both acts have already been getting together, sharing ideas and fine-tuning concepts, along with The Headies producers, in anticipation of a great show this year.
'It's been fun, fun, fun for me' Omawumi comments. 'From the photo shoot to all the meetings, rehearsals, fittings and interviews, I can see that I'm going to have the fun of my life. And I promise this year's guests will have even more fun. Me and M.I go craze!'. The Headies 2012 will hold at the Eko Hotel and Suites on Saturday October 20.
Now in its seventh year, The Headies (also known as Hip Hop World Awards) is Nigeria's premiere honours event for urbane music and hip hop culture. Produced and presented to match some of the biggest awards shows from around the world, The Headies annually celebrate deserving Nigerian music stars, giving honour to whom it is due, and encouraging many to step up their game in order to enter The prestigious Headies alumni.

Omawumi confirms: “I feel so thankful for my baby!”

Pop diva, Omawumi Megbele, has confirmed news going around the blogosphere since the morning of Saturday on her delivery of a baby girl in United States. The vibe started after her status update this morning: “A child is God’s reward – Psalm 127:3b. Welcome sweetie,” accompanied by an ‘It’s a girl’ display picture.
“I’m so excited I have delivered,” she announced in a statement from her public relations representatives. “It’s always fulfilling for me when I achieve a milestone in my life.”
The “pretty bundle of joy” was delivered at Rockdale Medical Center in Atlanta.
Speculation about Ms. Megbele’s pregnancy had reached fever pitch from as early as January, as media and other observers pointed to a bulge in her smash hit video “If you ask me” as well as her cover shoot for Genevieve magazine, however Omawumi continued her tradition of keeping her personal life private until absolutely necessary – preferring to take care of the unborn child away from the media glare.
“You know the whole story that once you deliver all the pain goes away,” she added in the statement, “That’s a lie! But when I heard her cry and held her in my arms, I felt so thankful and in awe of God’s awesomeness!”
For her many fans anxious to hear from mother and child, Omawumi is glad to tell them: “Baby and mama are fine, great actually. And we feel soo good!”
Omawumi’s New Single – I go go

R&B diva Omawumi took her music to unprecedented heights with the January release of ‘If You Ask Me (Na Who I Go Ask)’, the Cobhams Asuquo-produced first single from her upcoming sophomore album. The song’s catchy jazz rhythms and the poignant message which Omawumi’s powerful voice so effortlessly delivers have made ‘If You Ask Me’ a massive radio hit. Directed by cinematography maestro Clarence Peters, the accompanying music video of the single has racked up over 15,500 hits on YouTube.
As the momentum builds up towards the release of her highly anticipated second studio album, Omawumi offers a preview of what is to come with yet another single, ’I Go Go’. This song is a reggae/soul infusion whose lyrics capture the pain ofunrequited love.
Fans and music critics alike will undoubtedly be moved by Omawumi’s unrestrained emotive vocals and empathize with the wounded character she plays in this potential classic.
OMAWUMI'S 'IF YOU ASK ME' VIDEO IS FINALLY OUT

In January, West African Idol runner up Omawumi released 'If You Ask Me (Na Who I Go Ask)', a superb track put together by award winning producer Cobhams Asuquo. With the song's jazz improvisations, powerful vocals and poignant lyrics, 'If You Ask Me' instantly became a massive radio favourite.
'What would the video for this powerful song look like?' was the question on everyone's lips. The wait is over, and finally 'If You Ask Me', the music video, has been released! With acclaimed director Clarence Peters at the helm of affairs, the video's cinematography is top notch. Add Omawumi's stunning wardrobe and her brilliant interpretation of the song, and you have the perfect climax for a truly moving track. You'll love this one!
