50 Cent's New Energy Drink To Feed 1 Billion Kids In Africa (VIDEO)

Moved to action by a recent trip to famine-torn Africa, 50 cent (born Curtis James Jackson III) has launched an energy drink whose profits will feed 1 billion kids in the region.

The rapper has teamed up with Pure Growth Partners to bring Street King, a new energy drink, to the market, PopCrush.com reports. Proceeds from every sale will go toward feeding 1 billion kids in Africa.

"I grew up without money, but I didn't grow up hungry," 50 Cent said in a video introducing the product. "It's our responsibility to come together and do things to create a solution."

Street King hit stores this week, in orange mango and grape flavors, and the rapper is encouraging fans to register at the energy drink's website.

"I need you to utilize your energy--your voice--to provide additional motivation for me at times," 50 Cent said.

Wangari Maathai, First African Woman To Win Nobel Peace Prize, Dies…

Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel peace prize, died on Sunday night of cancer. She was 71.

A towering figure in Kenya, Maathai was renowned as a fearless social activist and an environmental crusader. Her Green Belt Movement, which she founded in 1977, planted tens of millions of trees.

Maathai's death was confirmed in a statement on the movement's website.

"It is with great sadness that the family of Professor Wangari Maathai announces her passing away on 25 September 2011, at the Nairobi hospital, after a prolonged and bravely borne struggle with cancer. Her loved ones were with her at the time."

Maathai was a pioneer from an early age and in many spheres. After winning a scholarship to study in the US, she returned to a newly independent Kenya, becoming the first woman in east and central Africa to obtain a PhD. Maathai was also the first woman professor the University of Nairobi, where she taught veterinary medicine.

Her work with voluntary groups alerted her to the struggles of women in rural Kenya, and it quickly became her life's cause. Noticing how the rapid environmental degradation was affecting women's lives, she encouraged them to plant trees to ensure future supplies of firewood and to protect water sources and crops.

Maathai's agenda quickly widened as she joined the struggle against the repressive and corrupt regime of Daniel arap Moi. Her efforts to stop powerful politicians grabbing land, especially forests, brought her into conflict with the authorities, and she was beaten and arrested numerous times. Her bravery and defiance made her a hero in Kenya.

In awarding Maathai the Nobel peace prize in 2004, the Nobel committee said that her "unique forms of action have contributed to drawing attention to political oppression – nationally and internationally".

Maathai served as an assistant minister in President Mwai Kibaki's government from 2003 to 2005, but her refusal to keep silent on some issues saw her politically sidelined, and she lost her seat after a single term. Her work schedule remained hectic however, and she wrote several books and travelled widely.

Maathai had been in and out of hospital this year, though most Kenyans were unaware of her illness until it was reported in the local media late last week.

"Professor Maathai's departure is untimely and a very great loss to all who knew her – as a mother, relative, co-worker, colleague, role model, and heroine; or who admired her determination to make the world a more peaceful, healthier, and better place," the statement from her organisation said.

Maathai is survived by her three children and a granddaughter.

Angola's Leila Lopes takes Miss Universe 2011 crown

Leila Lopes, 25, from Angola was crowned Miss Universe, beating out 88 competitors. In a brunette-dominated field of flat-stomached, leggy contestants, Lopes' sweet smile and hairstyle (up in topknot, not long cascading curls) set her apart from the start. She's also one of few black women ever to snag the crown, reports AP.

Speaking in a timid voice after the pageant last night in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Lopes said her smile was her biggest weapon. She also told reporters that she has never had cosmetic surgery and that her three tips for beauty were to get a lot of sleep, use sun block even when it's not sunny and to drink lots of water.

When asked about racism, Lopes said that "any racist needs to seek help. It's not normal in the 21st century to think in that way."

Lopes also said that "as Miss Angola I've already done a lot to help my people. "I've worked with various social causes. I work with poor kids, I work in the fight against HIV. I work to protect the elderly and I have to do everything that my country needs," she said. "I think now as Miss Universe I will be able to do much more."

Her interview question wasn't particularly tough. She was asked what physical trait she would change if she could. "Thank God I'm very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn't change a thing," Lopes said. "I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life."

The first runner-up was Olesia Stefanko of Ukraine and the second runner-up was Priscila Machado of Brazil. Miss Philippines took the third spot and Miss China took the fourth.

Okoya's son launches Nigerian Doll line

Most if not all Naija girls grew up playing with oyibo dolls. You know? The blonde hair blue eyed
barbies that looked nothing like a naija girl. Well, with growing access to new technologies and globalization, entrepreneurship is big business in Nigeria as we are seeing many young people going into business instead of seeking employment with oil firms or banks as they did in the past. One of such savvy young people is Taofick Okoya.
Taofick Okoya.
Taofick, who has a little daughter realized that there was a gap in the market when he wanted to buy his daughter a doll and noticed all he could get his hands on were white dolls; White dolls in the most populous black nation? Sometimes our mentality as blacks/Nigerians is quite startling!!! But I'll keep my opinions to myself and rather celebrate with Taofick, as he brings his entrepreneurial pursuit into fruition.
Wuraola
And not only are these Nigerian dolls just dolls: they are named the Queens of Africa dolls for a reason; they will help the average African girl child effortlessly relate with being black and beautiful...
Nneka!
...Education about African history is emphasized with cds and inscriptions that come with the dolls, alongside cultural and moral values being heightened.
So mothers, fathers, grandpas and mas, and the young at heart, go get your Nneka, Azeezah, or Wuraola now!!! For now, the Azeezah doll is available at myasho.com
Azeezah!!

The ‘Queens of Africa‘ project team intend to achieve their goal of grooming the children as queens that will become role models.

Dambisa Moyo - Zambia's Beauty and Brains

I studied economics in college, so there is no way I am going to talk about fashion without tying in some economic elements into it. Okay, so have you heard of Dambisa Moyo? When last did you see a sexy, fashionable, buuuuuuutiful, just lovely to behold PhD holder? Particularly a woman?

Oxford educated economist Dambisa Moyo, with her PhD degree embodies
the epitome of beauty and brains. She was born in Zambia and left her country after high school to pursue further education in europe and America - so add an MBA from American University and MA from Harvard to her credentials. Yes, she is that well read.

Currently Dambisa is promoting her new book called Dead Aid where she argues the need for more entrepreneurship within the African continent and the need for african governments to wean themselves away from western aide.
Last Month she was named in Time 100 as one of the worlds most influetial people. Learn more about this african damsel here you can also see her videos

Wande Coal's Bio

Born Wande Ojosipe on the 18th of October 1985, 1st child in a family of 2 children Wande like most great musicians started singing in the teenage choir at his church. he got his break in the Nigerian entertainment industry as a dancer.

He continued improving his vocal skill and got signed to Don jazzy’s Mo’ Hits records in 2006. He featured on D’banj’s Rundown/Funk You up album on singles like; Loke, tonosibe and why me. Being signed to Mo’ Hits records he is also a member of the Mo’ Hits allstars, and played a major role in the recently released CV (Curriculum vitae) album.

His first single of the CV album “Ololufe” has been described as the greatest love song ever written by a Nigerian. Wande Coal has also recorded track with other Nigerian artist including; Ikechukwu, Naeto-C, SID D’Prince and P-Lola. He has been dubbed the town crier because of his performance where he announces the entrance of D’banj singing D koko.

His album Mushin to Mohits debuted in April 2009. It was very much anticipated before its release. Today; 4 months after the release, the album is still rated as one of the best to come out of Africa. His single Bumper to Bumper (a track off the album) has won several awards. We're not surprised because not only does the track keepyou on your feet; it leaves you breathless at the end.

Apart from being a talented singer Wande Coal is also a brilliant performer as can be seen at his numerous performances. As far as we are concerned, we've not seen the best of Wande, this is just the beginning; he is the future of Nigerian RnB.

Blu3 - Where you are

Where you are
is the recent single from the
2009 MTV Music Africa Award (MAMA) nominee for best group and best performer.
As far as I'm concerned,
this happens to be the best song to come
from Uganda's trio sensation blu3.

The song's beautiful
and the video is lovely.
The girls chose to do it different this time
by featuring Uganda's Moses Radio & Weasle TV.

What I like about this song is the beat.
It gives me a zouk vibe at one point
and then it seems like dance hall towards the end. The girls have done well this time. See for yourself

Benin: Djimon Hounsou's a father

Benin native and star of “Blood DiamondDjimon Hounsou and his partner, Kimora Lee, have finally let the world see their first child together. Baby Kenzo, who was born on Saturday May 30th and weighed 8 pounds, had his first photo shoot in OK Magazine with his parents and his half sisters, Aoki and Ming Lee (from a previous marriage to mogul Russel Simmons).

The couple, who reportedly got married in a secret traditional ceremony in his home country before her divorce to Simmons actually called his relatives in Benin during labor.“It was amazing! During labor I thought ‘We should call Africa!’. So we had Djimon’s family on the phone in Africa on speaker so they could hear the pushing and the first cry. It was a long labor. This was from 9 o’clock at night until 11 o’clock the next morning. I was so surprised because they say your third child is supposed to pop out but he did not pop out”.

Kimora praised Djimon's fatherhood skill by saying ,

“He’s so hands on. He holds the baby and flicks the doodies. You wouldn’t think a guy would be so hands on, so supportive, so strong yet so gentle”.

Even though the labor was hard, Kimora concluded the interview by saying , “I’m really blessed. I’m in a great place.I don’t really know how to put my finger on it exactly, but I feel like I’m on the second wind.”
