L'Uomo Vogue releases May 2012 Africa issue featuring UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and South African vocalist Lira

The May issue of L'Uomo Vogue is entirely dedicated to Africa, a Continent with great potentialities and a strong will to redeem itself.

What does it mean? It means that Africa is a Continent that has countless assets, unexpected possibilities and most of all is a young Continent with a strong desire to assert itself and give dignity to women and men in equal measure. A continent under construction that is constantly evolving and always trying to improve its life conditions. Africa needs to rebuild a new image, far removed from the one the media usually convey reporting on wars and famines that, although actually occurring, are not the only side to show.

L'Uomo Vogue decided to underline the positive side of this young continent from all points of view that is showing the willingness to succeed in fields such as the textile and the oil industry, from agriculture to the growing of cotton, coffee, cocoa, to tourism and cinema, as shown by Nollywood in Nigeria that produces 200 films every year. Education and health are the two main points the various governments are founding their battle on, building new schools, universities and well-equipped hospitals.

It’s a new representation of Africa - positive, creative and trusting its own assets: this is Africa evolving, that has already brought great changes. The whole issue is a string of portraits of local personalities: Presidents, First Ladies, Queens, but also artists, singers, musicians, actors, fashion designers, writers, models, always portrayed in a positive, joyful way. They have all accepted to be featured in this issue because conveying a positive image of this Continent means bringing everyone’s attention on a world that so far has been "left out", with the exception of a few African countries that have become a tourist destination.

Conveying a new image is fundamental for Africa also to give hope to the young and to the people who are working hard on their homeland’s economic growth. "Africa does not need charity. Africa needs investment and partnership. Joining forces with civil society and private sector, including non-traditional players, like the fashion industry, has become indispensable. Sustainable development is my top priority", stated UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon who appears on the cover. Other spotlights include multi-platinum award winning South African vocalist Lira who has already achieved mass success in her homeland and is ready to be introduced to the international market.

L’Uomo Vogue‘s Africa issue comes at a time when more and more people, the fashion industry included, are looking to the continent as a fresh source of inspiration and innovation. Fashionista contributor and founder of Africa Style Daily Zandile Blay said. “From fashion to film to politics, the continent is in the midst of a total makeover so Franca Sozzani and L’Uomo Vogue are right to document it.” This new issue also solidifies Sozzani as an editor who is passionate about promoting diversity in fashion – the same woman behind the groundbreaking all black Vogue Italia back in 2008.

“This edition is very dear to our hearts. We went around the country to look for the best ideas, the brightest innovations, the most cutting edge technology – young Nigerians who are doing amazing work across sectors and setting a new standard for Nigeria’s future.

There’s a feature on the exciting Co-Creation Hub, an arena that poolstalent, ideas and projects that are redefining Nigeria’s technology space; the Innovation Factory which is changing the way we see New Media in Nigeria; Student Circle which is revolutionising the way students across the country access knowledge, two young people who have found a solution to Nigeria’s power challenge and two deal web sites that are changing the way we buy and sell.

There is an interview with Idris Ayo Bello, an ideas factory who is responsible for Wennovation, Libraries Across Africa, AfyaZima, and The Next Cool Idea, a conversation with the three young men who run the path-finding Jobberman.com as well as an interview with the two young men behind the influential music website NotJustOk.com. The magazine also travels the country and discovers that the governments of Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and Anambra are harnessing their young citizens and grooming them for global competitiveness.

Y! also interviews 12 young Nigerians aged 21 and below, and christens them ‘The New New Establishment’. They are already driving Nigeria’s future and include designer Adebayo Oke-Lawal, blogger SheiFunmi, Bookneto founder Iyinoluwa Aboyeji and Sokoto-based Ahmed Mukoshy who created the Yarnable website.

All of this is capped off with a delicious mishmash of pop culture highlights — including the ‘Signorina Vintage’ style shoot, Terrence Sambo exploring colonial architecture in Lagos, a feature story profiling the rise of the glossy magazine, interviews with Banky W, Kelly Hansome, Beat FM’s Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi, Soundcity’s Olamide Adedeji, Tinsel’s Gbenro Ajibade, and reviews of music, movies, radio, television, stage restaurants, gadgets and books from across the country.

“This is not the usual fare that you’d find in magazines – we have gone the extra mile to find a bouquet of the most impressive ideas from young Nigerians, who are now able to compete in a global economy. These are the guys who really own the future; these are the guys we should be celebrating. We’re extremely proud of what our team of editors has presented to our readers this issue – it’s a gift!” Y! Magazine is now available with vendors and stores across the country.

Sardauna Magazine Publisher arrested for #fuelsubsidy edition

About 72 hours ago, we were informed that the publisher of Sardauna Magazine, Mr. Rilwan Hassan had been arrested by the State Security Service (SSS) for publishing an edition on the ongoing fuel subsidy saga in Nigeria. Speaking on his arrest, Hassan tells Olamild Ent the following:

"At about 3pm on the wednesday 11th, January, 2012, my circulation manager was invited for questioning at the nnamdi azikwe international airport by the sss and his picture was taken. He later started receiving threat call from the sss operatives including the OC in charge of the airport. He was questioned concerning the latest sardauna magazine edition titled "Fuel Subsidy will spark revolt". He was asked to go and the magazine was realised.

They later followed him to our office and rearrested him and took away the batch of the magazine in our office after they couldn't find me in the office. I had to go to the headquarters and was taken in for questioning. I was asked who was sponsoring me and if the aim was to destabilise the government. I refused to answer their questions and instead insist that they release my staff. Some of the magazines were carted away. I was released after two and half hours because they found out that the press had been notified of my arrest.

We need to tell the world that their is no press freedom in nigeria despite the FOI bill."

Ladybrille Magazine Celebrates 4yr Anniversary, Honors Supermodel Nana Keita as Woman of the Month!

Ladybrille Magazine, an online magazine established in 2007 to re-brand the negative images of Africans in the West, celebrates four years of carrying out its mission in its June 2011 Special Anniversary/Model Edition.

“I am grateful to God for the vision to execute what is now Ladybrille Magazine and the ability to continue to sustain it thus far,” said Uduak Oduok, Founder of Ladybrille. “The letters we receive from many about the positive impact our publication has had on their lives makes it all worthwhile and motivates us to do more. I know it only gets better.”

To celebrate its four year anniversary, the online Magazine rolls out a special anniversary feature on Africa’s fashion models and names Supermodel Nana Keita, originally from Mali, as its Woman of the Month. The Ladybrille ‘Woman of the Month’ is a monthly feature on the online magazine which celebrates outstanding women, locally and internationally, for their brilliant contributions to society.

“At the core of Ladybrille’s identity is the African model. I began Ladybrille because I felt when Africa was represented in the West, especially through fashion, it was always extreme polarities of who Africans were, interlaced with stories of war, HIV Aids, famine and poverty. I wanted to tell the story that is never told both in the fashion industry and mainstream America,” explains Oduok. “The fashion industry at large and also Africa’s fashion and entertainment industry owes a healthy respect and tribute to the African model who has really helped propel both Western designers and the entire continent of Africa, for decades, into the lime light.”

Ms. Keita joins the Ladybrille Alumni list of brilliant Women of the Month(s) including Supermodel Iman, Saran Kaba Jones (Founder Face Africa), Teresa Clarke (Former Goldman Sachs Executive & Founder of Africa.com) and Currie Lee (Attorney turned Fashion Designer of the popular Asian brand D-Sata).

“I'm very humbled and have so much respect for every single one of these (ladies) and hope one day to reach their level of accomplishments,” said the Supermodel in response to what it felt like to join the list of accomplished Ladybrille Alumni Women of the Months. “I also thank Ladybrille for the support and consideration towards (me) and wish the magazine much success.”

Supermodel Nana Keita’s feature will be published this week on the magazine’s website at www.ladybrillemag.com.

A Day After Fela Inspired Beyoncé Scoops Billboard Millenium Award, Ladybrille Releases MI2 UK Launch Exclusive Interview

A day after Beyoncé, who cites Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer, Fela, as her inspiration for her latest album “4,” received The Billboard Millennium Award at the 2011 Billboard Music Awards, Ladybrille Magazine releases Ladybrille-MI2 The Movie UK Launch Exclusive Interview.

“I recorded more than 60 songs: everything I ever wanted to try, I just did it. I started off being inspired by Fela Kuti. I actually worked with the band from Fela! (the Broadway musical based on his life) for a couple of days … what I learned most from Fela was artistic freedom: he just felt spirit,” said Beyoncé in an interview to Billboard Magazine.

“It is highly significant that a world music influencer like Beyoncé who wins such a significant award cites Fela as her key inspiration in her latest body of work,” said Uduak Oduok, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Ladybrille Magazine. “This speaks to the powerful influence of Nigerian music and musicians,” continued Oduok.

“Our latest release of the Ladybrille-MI2 The Movie UK Launch Exclusive Interview, a day after the Billboard Awards, is to underscore this point and encourage the new generation of Nigerian and African musicians to work hard to leave the kind of legacy that Fela left for the world. We are very proud to have identified and introduced M.I, exclusively, to the Western masses and hope he is part of inspiring the future generations of Beyonces.”

Signed to Chocolate City music label in Nigeria, Jude Abaga aka Mr. Incredible aka M.I made his official debut, in Nigeria, with his Freshman Album ‘Talk About It,’ which was released on December 11th, 2008. In 2009, Ladybrille Magazine introduced M.I, in an exclusive, on the cover of its February issue, as a future rising star to watch to its Western influential readership. Since then, M.I has gone on to win over 14 Awards including Best Hip-hop and Best New Act at the 2009 MTV MAMA Awards. The rising global African music star has also been nominated nineteen (19) times, since 2009, for numerous awards including his nomination, last year, at the 2010 BET Awards.

Hosted by Ladybrille’s Maria Okanrende, The Ladybrille Magazine MI2 The Movie UK Launch Exclusive Interview features a one-on-one with the rap star on his UK launch event, his career and rising exposure in the US market; including his appearance on the Wendy Williams Show and his nomination at the 2010 BET Awards, and his hope to win a Grammy for his country and for Africa, among many topics.

Nigerian music has come of age, this you'll say is common knowledge. That our music is gradually gaining relevance in the western world is also a fact very few people will disagree with. How have they contributed?

Well, music channels have established an African arm of the channels, even a couple of shows on radio have gotten on African radio all around the continent. Take 2! Goodluck Jonathan answers the hard questions – in exclusive Y! Magazine interview!

After three successful editions, the editors of Y! Magazine are pleased to announce its elections issue! Themed The RSVP Issue, (Register.Select.Vote.Protect), this historic edition achieves an impressive string of firsts.

In an unprecedented show of acceptance, President Goodluck Jonathan sits down to a live interview with Y! – a two-hour exclusive with Chude Jideonwo, the Editor, and Aziza Uko.

Mr. Jonathan – the one candidate with everything to lose as the incumbent and the only democratic president not elected into office - takes on hard questions about the youth debate, the power sector, the Benin-Ore road, Wikileaks, the EFCC, the PDP, with exclusive pictures from TY Bello and Obi Somto.

Sample questions below:

Power – you took it as a priority when you came into office – but, as with successive governments, one year down the line in terms of practical change in everyday lives, not much seems to have changed. Why not?

I cannot agree with you that not much have changed. Before Nigeria started investing in the IPPs our production was just about 1000MW now we have attained 4000 MW even though by the investments we have made we should have attained 10,000MW if not for the constitutional challenges that we faced in investing money from all ties of government into the IPPs. But we are back on track and will make quick progress.

Also, we have seen the usual band of millionaires who seem to support every government of the day making headlines as supporters of your campaign. Many believe that these people are not inspired by your message, rather their own selfish interest to remain in favour of your government. Can you assure us of independence from these money-bags if elected?

I run an independent government and at all times our decision-making process has placed national interest over special interests. This is how we have managed to solve problems like perennial fuel scarcity.
Many Nigerians have also come out to strongly identify the PDP’s big umbrella with its many narrow interests, as the problem with the country. Some like Prof Wole Soyinka, have said the PDP is wired against Nigeria’s good, what would you say to that?
Nigeria is a country with many challenges and I can appreciate our collective impatience to make progress. The problems we have cannot be belittled to the point of seeing them as problems of PDP or problems caused by the PDP. The problems we have are problems that the PDP is not solving fast enough. I concede.
More of these hard questions on the lips of every Nigerians and frank answers are in the latest issue of Y!

“We are proud of this achievement because it is the first time that a serving President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria would grant a lifestyle magazine an interview,” said Ms. Uko, who assumed the position of Y!’s Editor-at-Large in March. “And it is the first time that Mr. President would grant a face-to-face sit-down with any media outfit this campaign season. We are obviously very proud of this scoop – hence our special double-cover issue.”
It’s a double cover – and the second cover has MI, Banky W, Omoni Oboli, Sound Sultan, Ruggedman and Ice Prince share their thoughts on these elections and the future, plus an exclusive RSVP shoot with Obi Somto.

Y! also chronicles the historic youth participation and organization in these elections. Nmachi Jidenma reports on how young people are organising in Working for Change, James Sambo scores on youth volunteering for various campaigns in Team Spirit, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu shares his experience hosting Nigeria’s first ever youth-focused presidential debate, Ifreke Inyang takes a crucial look at the impact of Twitter and Facebook in these elections in Online vs Offline, there’s an interview with Nigeria’s youngest campaign manager Ohimai Amazie, Cheta Nwanze writes Don’t forget the Governors and for those Spoilt for Choice, four supporters tell what’s special about their Muhammadu Buhari, Nuhu Ribadu, Goodluck Jonathan and Ibrahim Shekarau.

In a style shoot, Y! captures the young (and the old) in everyday situations who say one thing – it’s cool to vote! And, in addition to this bumper package, Y! debuts Y! XTRA – a pictures, parties, fashion, and style pullout that comes free!

“Call it recommended reading for the 2011 elections - and after!” said its Managing Editor, Adebola Williams. “We call this a collector’s item – and we know for certain that this historic RSVP edition is guaranteed to blow you away.”

The magazine is available from Tuesday, April 11 nationwide. Mbong Amata, the star of an upcoming Hollywood meets Nollywood political suspense movie “Black Gold-The Struggle of the Niger Delta,” is Ladybrille Magazine’s Woman of the Month for its April 2011 Film Edition.

Black Gold, based on the true story of the infamous Niger Delta region in Nigeria, is about environmental justice and the fight over the control of the scarce oil resources that the world runs on. “I feel very much on top of the world right now to be the April 2011 Woman of the Month for Ladybrille magazine; and to think me worthy enough of such an uncommon honor is indeed extremely inspiring,” exclaimed Mbong Amata. “Being a part of the brand "Ladybrille" has really gone a long way in boosting a lot of positive energy in me, in more ways than one, especially a brand that has had a lot of reputable and iconic women connected to it. It has further given me a colossal leap in my field as an actress from Nigeria and Nollywood that is being celebrated.”

Ladybrille Magazine was founded in 2007 to de-stigmatize the negative images of Africans by exposing its youthful, urban and explosive fashion and entertainment industries to the Western masses. The Ladybrille ‘Woman of the Month’ is a monthly feature on the online digital magazine which celebrates outstanding women, locally and internationally, for their brilliant contributions to society.

Past Women of the Months include Supermodel IMAN, Face Africa’s Founder Saran Kaba Jones, South Korean-American prominent fashion designer Currie Lee and Former Goldman Sachs Executive & Founder of Africa.com Teresa Clarke, among many.

Mbong’s interview will be published on the magazine’s website at www.ladybrillemag.com on Wednesday April 6th, 2011.

With the applause and exclamations that came from clients, friends and family, the brand was born; and Exclamations Couture has since focused on setting the standards for the tailoring of Shirts and Suits in Africa.

FAB pioneered the production of these to the same exacting standards obtainable in the United Kingdom studying the works and production processes of the ancient craftsmen and designers on Jermyn Street and Savile Row.
