Mercy Johnson ends the year on high notes

…Emerges Google’s most searched celebrity, beaten only by Facebook and 2go
…wins Outstanding actress award in Australia

One actress who made so much news in the year 2011 is delectable screen goddess Mercy Johnson. Saying that the year has been a really wonderful year for her is stating the obvious, as the curvaceous actress remained number one choice in Nollywood from Asaba, Enugu, Lagos, to Abuja and beyond gracing posters and movie jackets.

In the year under review, she got married and was adjudged the best actress at the Afro-Australian Music and Movies Award (AAMMA) which is the only African award event in the whole of Australia and New Zealand. The award recognized Mercy Johnson as Africa’s Queen of the screen which is a symbolic recognition. The award which is the third edition held at the Emmore Theatre in Sydney, Australia. Though Mercy Johnson was regrettably absent at the awards due to to mixed up flight logistics beyond her control but prolific Nollywood actor, Desmond Elliot received the award on her behalf. Adding icing on the cake, MJ as she is fondly called recently emerged the most ‘goggled’ Nigerian celebrity on the popular search engine Google. According to statistics by Google, Mercy Johnson was the most searched Nigerian celebrity on the internet. She was beaten to the third place by Facebook, the social networking site, which came first, followed by 2go, a mobile messenger that allows one to chat with friends for free.

Apart from playing lead roles in big budget movie and acting in more than a dozen movies through the cause of the year, ,Mercy Johnson has also gained headlines throughout the year with her daring move to go bald for a movie role and her controversial wedding in August and also for her blindness rumor recently. The Okene, Kogi state native who made her movie debut in ‘’The Maid’’ years ago has appeared in over 100 movies and still counting and with other notable awards to her credit including the best actress at the exquisite Future Awards among others Mercy is truly the star to beat.

The top search terms concerning Mercy Johnson include: ‘mercy Johnson wedding’, and ‘Mercy Johnson blind’, ‘about Mercy Johnson’ among others. Specifically thanking her fans Mercy says “I really appreciate you all for your love and concern throughout the year and also for your concern and calls about the blindness rumor, I really appreciate you all for the love, i felt so loved, didn’t know people care so much about my safety this much".

According to her PR Agency, Bigsam Media, the actress is on her knees saying thank you for being there for her all through the year. ‘We really want to thank Mercy’s fans and the general public for making her so significant in their lives and in this country by extension. I appreciate them for making me their favorite”.

Death and Blindness Rumour: Mercy Johnson is Alright

As at the time of writing this, blogspheres and entertainment industry is awashed with rumour that star actress, Mercy Johnson suffered blindness and experienced a terrible accident that led to her death.

This rumor has no resemblance or iota of truth. Mercy is on a movie location in Lagos and getting set for her trip to Australia in a matter of days. After diligent investigation, we discovered the rumour started as a result of a publicity stunt initiated by producer of a movie where Mercy’s character lost an eye. Another part of the rumor was started by detractor whose only goal is pull MJ down by all means.

It is despicable to note that these rumors were strengthened by writers who did not crosscheck before posting on their blogs, platforms or newspapers. We decry this act of insensitivity and irresponsibility especially as it affects family, friends and fans. We appreciate family, friends and fans that have taken time to call out of concern and love and we wish to let them know that mercy is hale and hearty.

We implore bloggers and writers to kindly cross check reports on mercy with us to avoid using their platforms to promote falsehood and abate inappropriate ‘’PR stunts’’ by those who want to sell their movies or those whose goal is to pull others down at all costs.

‘I Once Rejected Sex For Movie Role’ – Mercy Johnson

Sultry Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson, has said that achieving success in the Nigerian movie industry was not on a bed of roses, as she had been asked to take movie role in exchange for sex.
Mercy, who is arguably the most sought-after Nollywood actress of the moment, in a recent interview explained that it takes only God to be successful in the Nigerian movie industry.

When asked if she has been a victim of sexual harassment, the Kogi State-born damsel: said
yes! Such had come my way, but if you sleep around for roles, will you also sleep around to make your fans love your work? You only choose what you want. It only takes God to be successful in this industry. It’s a matter of choice if the ladies are approached with such. If you feel that your body is cheap and worth the script, then go ahead, but it is an individual thing. If any lady tells you in Nollywood it hasn’t happened to her, it is a cheap lie. Most people are scared of telling the truth, but the truth makes upcoming ones to watch their steps without making mistakes.”

Mercy was not born with a silver spoon in her mouth, so her growing up was terribly tough and now that the story has turned to success, she wouldn’t mind becoming a child again if she has her way. Hear her:
When I was in secondary school, I would wash my mates’ clothes and polish their shoes to get paid so that I can also pay my brother’s school fees, and whenever names of people owing school fees were mentioned, mine was always on top of the list.

“I faced a lot of embarrassment in school. My teachers flogged me; my uniform was always torn and tattered. When someone stole, they pointed at me because of my poor condition. It was a miserable life, but today, they’re most shocked at my success. I lived an inferior life throughout my school days… if I have my way; I want to be a child again and live large

TWO BRIDES AND A BABY…… IS THIS MERCY JOHNSON’S STORY?

In a couple of months, precisely on the 17th of November 2011, the much awaited movie, Two Brides and a Baby will be premiered amidst pomp and pageantry. In anticipation of the movie which has already gotten 12 nominations in its kitty from the Best of Nollywood Awards (BON), the grapevine has been agog and tongues have ceaselessly wagged over the similarity in the story line and that of the incidents leading to the recent wedding of sultry actress Mercy Johnson.

Some have even sworn to the high heavens that it is the true life
story of Mercy Johnson whose wedding plans to Prince Odianosen Okojie almost crashed when a woman showed up from the blues claiming she was legally married to Prince Odi with children to show.

For those who have seen the movie, the uncanny resemblance between the female lead Keche played by Keira Hewatch and Mercy Johnson coupled with the sequence of the unfolding drama makes it too much of a coincidence.

When the producer of the movie, Blessing Effiom Egbe was contacted on the veracity of the stories flying round, she declined commenting on the issue, saying movie lovers would have to wait to see the movie to confirm their curiosity.

Two Brides and a Baby is a beautifully crafted romantic comedy about Keche and Bankole whose plan to work down the aisle was jeopardized by the emergence of the other woman. Chains of Events within 24-hours spiral the ‘perfect relationship’ out of control and the two must
weigh whether to risk the moment or stake the future on what they feel.

The characterization is highly commendable with its unusual blend of tested and trusted hands like Stella Damasus, Kalu Ikeagwu and the producer Blessing Effiom Egbe sharing the centre stage with Keira Hewatch ,, O.C. Ukeje, Chelsea Eze and Okey Uzoeshi, perhaps the most
intriguing part is that no one outshone the other as their was a balance in their individual roles.

Blessing Effiom- Egbe though once a model who has traipsed the runway with international super models has come to stay and is in Nollywood for the long haul. This is not the first time out for the thespian as a producer as The Rivals which she co-produced with her friend and
colleague Omoni Oboli won the Best International Drama 2007, at the New York International Film Festival. Other movies she has featured in include, African Queen, The Vow, Before the Vow, After the Vow and Walking the Lane.
