DarkShades reaches for the STARS

A spectacular figure often drops; one that comes to blow your mind away. That is the case of Darkshades; a group of up and rising young African men with a genuine passion for music, although new, have fired up the state of Michigan with their music. Darkshades became an official entity in May 2009 and comprises of Cerkool, Jwon, and Faab. Cerkool (the lead vocalist); an aspiring soul/RnB singer started off singing in the choir. Juwon who would like to be known as Mr Coldfire (Jwon) started off with an admiration for 50 cent, JayZ and Lil Wayne. He incorporated their style and recreated "Mr Coldfire". Faab started off free styling and making mixtapes in his basement, he later decided it was time to go pro and so far, he has 120 mixtapes.

According to the boys, Darkshades is affirming the beauty in the many faces of the black race, emphasizing their determination and passion for music.

Their first studio recording Kamalosibe (meaning Let's go there) is a fusion of naija flavor, pop and dancehall. This song was produced by Origin (a former member of the group called Immaculate with works for Durella and the likes). Darkshades performed Kamalosibe on the 14th of August at the National Yoruba Youth Convention. They left the audience hype and impressed. This song has since been a state anthem in Michigan. Outsiders that attended this event left the convention with the phrase Kamalosibe.

According to Darkshade boys, "our genre is what we call "New Age",because of the uniqueness and futuristic vibe we compose in our music."

Darkshade is currently working on their album and mixtapes simultaneuosly. The album is titled "Darkshades:The Beginning" - a multi-genre album based strictly on real life experiences and creating cultural diversity. They have a new single called "Tribute to love" - a love song dedicated to the ladies using melodious tunes fusing R&B,Pop,Hip Hop and Naija Flav.

DARKSHADE MOTTO
"We are the essence of brotherhood, definition of real music. Futuristic and Unique. We are exuberant we are d different colors of the black race the beauty in it we are DARKSHADES".

Michigan: ASA Leadership Award Banquet

The city of Detroit stood still as African students came together from all over Michigan for the ASA Leadership Awards Banquet that was held on saturday, 20th of June. ASA stands for African Student Association whose aim is to be the link between the schools in Michigan and the youth in the different African organizations. The event was put together by Elizabeth Titi Ajayi Bridges; a graduate of Wayne State University.

The event kicked off with a performance by switch dance crew - an all female dance group with a passion for dance moves ranging from hip hop to coupe decale. They stirred up the crowd with sick moves; their impersonation of soulja boy (shades) was quite catchy too.

Awards such as ASA JJC/ ASA Alumni/ ASA Campus Life Legacy and much more were given and received.

Several African students and organizations were recognized for their commitment and service to the community. Congratulations to:

Mr ASA Muhammed Adewunmi Ajetumobi

Ms ASA Victoria Olaoluwakitan Awosika

Mr & Ms ASA award recognized beauty in and out and active involvement in the organization plus standing out and representing Africa to the fullest.

We say a big congratulations to TayoTv who received the ASA Heart and Soul Awards. An even bigger congratulations to the members of Yoruba Youth Corporation [YYC]; the organization received the ASA Empowering Africa Award. The president of YYC received the ASA emerging leader award.

We were thrilled to watch the AC Dancers of WASS [wayne african student society] of Wayne State University who brought down the roof with the hottest moves to decale gwada. Several performances like poetry, comedy, and an exquisite fashion show took place. Overall the event was a huge success and we thank God almighty for it.

We however, encourage the older folks to come out and support causes like this because we are the future. Special thanks to the planning committee for the hardwork and dedication towards the success of this event. We hope to see this event BIGGER and BETTER next year..
