OE WOMEN WATCH | MEET ESTHER IJEWERE-KALEJAIYE, THE INITIATOR OF WALK AGAINST RAPE (W.A.R.)

International Women’s Day is a global event dedicated to women’s accomplishments and leadership. It is officially recognized by the United Nations as “a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.” This year's International Women’s Day fell on March 8. Esther Ijewere – Kalejaiye is an enterprising social activist, youth advocate, Wife, Mother of two, Author and the executive director of Rubies Ink Initiative - A social enterprise outfit devoted to youth advocacy, public relations, social enterprise solutions amongst others.

An Olabisi Onabanjo University trained  Sociologist. As a social advocate, she is the brain behind W.A.R-Walk Against Rape, an advocacy initiative created to lend a voice for the victims of rape and demand justice for the perpetrator's, an initiative endorsed by the Lagos State Ministry Of Women Affairs. Esther is also the initiator of Project Capable ,a youth mentoring initiative geared towards creating a can  do mentality in the lives of secondary school students, which comes up annually,using celebs and accomplished individuals to inspire and motivate youngsters to rise to greatness.

Being an emerging young leader, Esther is the youngest recipient of The Idea Builders Women Mentoring Women Award, winning Mentee of the year 2010. She also won the award for “Best Use Of Advocacy” from her Alma Mata; Olabisi Onabanjo University in 2012 , for her contribution in fighting and creating awareness on Rape.  She is a Fellow with Vital Voices Global Leadership USA; an organization founded by Hillary Clinton and aimed at empowering young women change makers all over the world. She has toured several secondary schools, serving them counsel and sharing with them messages  of hope for a greater life. One of her major interest is advocacy and counseling on issues surrounding  women, child sexual abuse, family values, and youth empowerment.

Taking the walk to another level, she unveiled her first book on rape and violence against women, titled Breaking the SilenceThe book which is a guide to enlightening young women on knowledge needed to survive sexual situations, also enunciated that every woman was prone to being sexually assaulted at some point in her life, stating the possibility of a woman being prone to sexual assault at some point in her life. Breaking the Silence is also a guide for girls and women to know places to avoid and to know that there is indeed a law to warn perpetrators.  So far, it has helped to create an avenue for people to come out without feeling bad or fear being stigmatized to tell their stories.

SOLIDSTAR JOINS THE FIGHT AGAINST RAPE ...DONATES RAPE GUIDEBOOK TO SCHOOLS

Worried over the rising incidents of rape, particularly child sexual abuse, in Nigeria, Solidstar, a Nigerian music star, has joined the fight to stop rape by launching his ‘Solidstar Rape Campaign’ with particular interest in schools.

While condemning the high rate of rape cases in Nigeria, Solidstar revealed he wants to join the galaxy of stars and celebrities who use their power and status to fight for people’s cause and rights, “I want to use my fame and fortune to put the needs of others before mine and right the wrongs of our society, especially the rising trend of rape. That’s what gave birth to this anti-Rape initiative, Solidstar Rape Campaign.”

In partnership with his music label, Achievas Music, the Solidstar Rape Campaign has already put things in place to start visiting schools all over Nigeria with a view to creating awareness on Rape amid distributing free books on Rape to students.
The Solidstar Rape Campaign is more like an educational project and a charity project from the stable of Achievas Music. This anti-rape project is targeted at pupils in private and government-owned schools, including tertiary institutions.

They intend to raise awareness of Rape and sexual abuse by offering awareness raising talks and workshops in schools – they will also distribute free educative books and materials on rape awareness.
Notable among the books Solidstar will freely distribute to schools is the highly publicised and talk-of-the-town guidebook on Rape, ‘Breaking the Silence’.

With the foreword written by Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairman of House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Breaking the Silence has also been endorsed by Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State.
According to the Author, Esther Ijewere-Kalejaye, “The handbook will educate and sensitize the society on sexual abuse, the importance of reporting rape cases, where to get help, who to talk to, help lines to call and other vital information on rape and sexual abuse. The book is a ‘must have’ for everyone; parents, guardians, teachers, students (secondary schools and tertiary institutions). I welcome this great initiative by Solidstar.”

Solidstar is a Nigerian Hip hop, R&B, dancehall, afro-pop singer, producer and songwriter. He sings in English, Pidgin English and other Nigerian languages. He achieved national fame on the basis of his hit single, "One in a Million" featuring superstar, 2face.

Born Joshua Iniyezo on 8 November 1988, Solidstar hails from the Isoko minority ethnic group in Delta State, Nigeria, Specifically, his village is Aviara in Isoko South local government area of the state. He was born and bred in Ajegunle, but at present, resides in Festac Town, Lagos. He started singing and playing instruments, such as drums at the age of eight in his church choir and took to singing professionally in 2004.


He attended Goriola Primary and Oshodi Secondary School, Tolu Complex, Olodi Apapa for both his primary and secondary school education. He is looking to further his education soon.

WALK AGAINST RAPE NIGERIA BREAKS SILENCE ON RAPE – UNVEILS INFORMATION HANDBOOK BY THE COORDINATOR; ESTHER IJEWERE-KALEJAIYE, AND INTERACTIVE BLOGSPOT


Walk Against Rape Nigeria , the organisation founded to continuously help in raising awareness of sexual violence, its prevalence and effects and in particular highlight the importance and need for appropriate high quality and specialised support for survivors unveils the first of its kind handbook in Nigeria titled“BREAKING THE SILENCE” written by the National Coordinator Esther Ijewere-Kalejaiye

According to her the handbook will educate and sensitise the society on sexual abuse, the importance of reporting rape cases, where to get help, who to talk to , helplines to call and other vital information on rape and sexual abuse, the book  is a “must have” for everyone; Parents, Guardians, Teachers, Students (secondary and tertiary institution.  The book will be available in major bookshops and malls  Nationwide and it can also be purchased online.

We are also unveiling our official blogspot (www.walkagainstrape.blogspot.comwhere people can get up to date information on rape cases in Nigeria, read real life stories of rape survivors, report cases of sexual abuse and helplines to report cases, the aim of the blog is to sensitise the society on the scourge of rape and how victims should be treated.

At Walk Against Rape Nigeria we have a vision of a Nigeria where the Government and criminal Justice system support and empower rape victims in all its interventions and our mission is to provide a bridge between victims and the system so that more victims break their silence  to report cases and demand for justice .
The book will be unveiled on the 11th of October in commemoration of the“International Girl Child Day”, 
 Various celebrities such as  Kate Henshaw-Nuttal, Jimmy Jatt, Ali Baba, Owen Gee, Gt the Guiterman, Gbemi Olateru Olabegi (OAP)Isio Wanogho (Model), Bolaji Rosiji, Ego Obaro, Praise Fowowe,Jerrilyn Mulbah, Jodie,Bhaira (AMBO 3), Toni Payne, amongst other top celebrities have also endorsed the walk and participated in the previous editions.

We have all it takes

Rubies Ink's We have all it takes Nigeria is a special mentorship programme for young Nigerians particularly those of secondary school age, using celebrities as mentors and muse, turning them to motivational speakers...to motivate, inspire and educate several young Nigerians who look up to them as mentors and their icon...its a six month educational tour in the six educational district in Lagos state from march to august 2010.

This is the follow up plan for Project Capable in october.denrele, dj gosporells,lolar shon,owen gee, lolade facos,shola ajayi, mc icewater, koffi, sound sultan, uti nwachukwu and others are some of the celebrities billed to speak at the six months educational tour.
