She continued as she laid emphasis on the financial importance of being a rep “In a tough economy, people would still buy food and cosmetics because makeup makes us feel good. Tara Fela-Durotoye, Chief Executive Officer of Africa's leading beauty brand, House of Tara - who is iconic for setting up the first make up studio and establishing Nigeria's first make up school in 2004 - spoke to CNN's African Voices, a weekly show that highlights Africa's most engaging personalities, exploring the lives and passions of people who are shaping change in Africa.

Since hosting the first ever gathering of makeup professionals in Nigeria, Makeup In Nigeria Conference (MINC) in 2014, Tara has made several appearances on premium global platforms including the New York Forum Africa (NYFA), France24 and Africa 24 by Reuters.In this interview, Tara shares deep secrets behind her passion, building a business from scratch in Africa and how she has used as a tool for empowering young women to build businesses whilst adding value to the country.“My story became one of inspiration to others of the possibilities that exist in our country, don't just get a job, do something that is tied to a purpose. It should be all about purpose," said Tara Fela-Durotoye. “I started a mentorship program to mentor young girls because to make impact, I need to share my story with the next generation and I always tell my mentees that it’s their responsibility as women to develop other women.

Speaking on the brand's achievements, she said; “Today we have about 14 make-up schools across the country where people have been trained to become make-up artists. I can confidently say that for 80 % of the make-up artists that are active players in the industry today, either working as entrepreneurs or working within other beauty brands, are trained by House of Tara. And I think for me that is the greatest joy.”The feature included appearances from some of her mentees: Gbemisola Adebayo of @hegaiandesther, Arese Ugwu of @smartmoneywitharese, Iroghama Ogbeifun of @hairvenhaircare, Peculiar Beauty, and other brilliant entrepreneurs.

Leading Nigerian makeup entrepreneur, Tara Fela-Durotoye has expressed gratitude at being honoured by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader. The recognition is given for her professional accomplishments and commitment to society, alongside 198 other professionals from 70 countries.

"Our team at House of Tara was excited to receive news of this global recognition," she said upon receiving the news. "We are very focused on our vision of building a globally respected beauty company that Africans can be proud of whilst building the lives of young women through entrepreneurship around the continent. We are inspired to do even more."

A lawyer and mother of three, Mrs. Fela-Durotoye is the founder and creative director of House of Tara International (H.O.T). She launched the first bridal directory in 1999, set up international standard makeup studio, and established the first makeup school in Nigeria. In 2010, her company House of Tara was selected as the only Nigerian participant for that year’s FORTUNE/State Department Global Women’s Mentoring Partnership Program.

Mrs. Fela-Durotoye who has been described as the continent's Mary Kay is currently working on the national project 100 Voices, aimed at creating a platform to share the stories of these women to help develop the nation. The inspiring stories of 100 H.O.T beauty representatives will also be amplified and shared as symbols of the possibilities of empowerment through H.O.T. She is also currently working on her book: ‘How to Turn Your Hobby into a Thriving Business’.

"This news is significant as it coincides with our 100 Voices project," she said. "Which will document the impact of our work with young women over the past decade, and signpost where we want to go with that mission."

Previous honourees for Young Global Leader include Group Chief Executive of Oando Plc, Wale Tinubu; Managing Director of MNET Africa, Biola Alabi; Board Member of Clinton Foundation, Chelsea Clinton; US singer and recording artist, William Adams; TV host Funmi Iyanda, and erstwhile Executive Director of FATE Foundation, Osayi Oruene.

Every year, the World Economic Forum bestows the honour of Young Global Leader on distinguished individuals below 40.
