13-year-old Akorede Odukale was thrilled as he got to perform with his icon, Lagbaja on the 19th of December 2013 at a yearly Lagbaja concert, which held at the General Hospital, Ikeja.
Koresax played “Nothing for you” and the legend sang along as they both serenaded the crowd.
“This is a dream come true,” said an over-excited Korede. “With this I know that all the hard work is starting to pay off for my family and I,” he added.
Lagbaja beckoned on the audience to watch out for Akorede on TV, as he is a star in the making. Akorede Odukale is one of the finalists in the on-going second season of Nigeria’s Got Talent.

In March 1997, Lágbájá established his club, Motherlan’ in the heart of Ikeja in Lagos. Motherlan’s design is influenced by the traditional African town or market square, where people gather under the moonlight for ceremonies and artistic events like dance, music, story telling, wrestling etc. True to this function, over the years, it has become a place for many comedians to polish their act in front of a demanding audience.With a serene gorge of beautiful trees and greens as background, the venue merges traditional Africa with the contemporary, creating the ambience of the countryside in the urban city. Lágbájá performs at Motherlan’ every last Friday of the month to a full house of faithfuls.
On Saturday, contemporary highlife artiste, Lagbaja rocked the house at Ultima Studios where Project Fame is produced. The masked one performed his hit songs ‘Nothing for You’ and Gele Skentele.
The highly innovative musician did his thing on stage after the remaining 14 contestants performed some of his popular numbers and other songs by different artistes within the same genre. Apart from performing on stage, Lagbaja was a celebrity judge who appraised and criticized the performances of the contestants.
Most of the contestants did a good job in their performances. It could be easily seen that Lagbaja was a source of influence to many of the contestants. One of the contestants Shehu even dressed like him in his usual masked attire.
After the contestants performed their songs, Lagbaja picked up his saxophone and performed much to the delight of the audience. Lagbaja broke through the music industry in 1993 with his self-titled debut album Lagbaja. Following the success of the album he has gone on to release seven other albums with each album being a step forward from his last work. With a career spanning 17 years, Lagbaja has won several awards-local and international- and has remained relevant.
It’s because of his contribution to the growth of music in Nigeria that the producers of Project Fame decided to allow contestants perform his songs and also make him a guest judge. Lagbaja is not the first artiste to get this honour this season as Asa and Samini have also graced this year’s Project Fame with their presence. One can only guess which celerity will make an appearance next week.
Voting is currently going on and you can vote for your favourite contestant by texting his number to 305 from an MTN line. Each text costs N50. Last weekend Modele and Samuel were kicked off from the show after being a part of the contestants with the lowest public votes and after failing to be saved by the judges, the faculty and their fellow contestants.
From Monday to Friday you can watch the contestants as they live their life in the Performance Academy in 30 minute episodes. Project Fame is currently showing on several TV stations in the country.

The first question that is often asked when Lágbájá is encountered is, “Why the mask?” Basically, Lágbájá’s mask is used as an icon of man’s facelessness. Lágbájá
Lágbájá is a Yoruba word that means somebody, nobody, anybody or everybody. It perfectly depicts the anonymity of the so called “common man”. The mask and the name symbolize the faceless, the voiceless in the society, particularly in Africa. Once you see Lágbájá’s mask you are reminded of your own facelessness. This symbolism is so powerful that Lágbájá’s mask has popularized the use of the mask concept by other artistes both in Nigeria and beyond.
Though the concept was developed long before that, his first album (entitled Lágbájá) was released to National acclaim in 1993. Over the years and more albums later, the music continues to fascinate with its unique focus on a core of African drums. His music is a product of various influences ranging from traditional Yoruba music to Jazz. Often the music is purely instrumental- an interplay between traditional Yoruba percussions, drums, chants, and western instruments, especially the saxophone. When there are lyrics, they are primarily sung in Yoruba, English or a blend of the two as is colloquially spoken in Yoruba cities. Many of his songs dwell on serious social issues, while others simply entertain. Some are dance inducing while others pass serious messages in humourous ways.
One thing that links all the songs together is his use of traditional African drums. Traditional Yoruba drums are the most prominent. Four families of these drums are employed in creating different grooves and moods. The dundun/gangan family is the most prominent and at times up to five drummers combine all the various components to create the polyrhythms. The bata ensemble is led by two musicians who alternate between soft high toned driving rhythms with their omele bata, and thunderous loud talk with their mum drum- iya ilu. The general percussionist leads the sakara ensemble. The fourth family, used as the backbone of the groove is the ogido, a derivative of the ancient gbedu. The ensemble of drummers constitute the larger part of the band. Vocalists and western instrumentalists make up the rest. Lágbájá’s groovy fusion has been refered to as afrojazz, afrobeat, higherlife and afropop until now that he himself has christened the music AFRICANO, alluding mostly to the central role of African drums and grooves in his music.
