WHO WILL BE THE NEXT FACE OF MTV BASE? MTV BASE VJ SEARCH - NIGERIA PREMIERES ON MTV BASE & STV

Fun new reality show “MTV Base VJ Search - Nigeria” kicks off next week; the 3-part TV series focuses on the hunt for a brand new VJ (Video Jockey or TV presenter) for music channel MTV Base (DStv Channel 322 & STV) – one of the most coveted jobs in the music entertainment business!

Seven years after Cynthia “C-Von” Okpala became MTV Base’s first Nigerian VJ, the discovery of MTV Base’s newest VJ wannabe is only 3 weeks away.    Episode one of the MTV Base VJ Search – Nigeriafollows a host of hopefulls as they make their bid for fame and fortune.  

Being a VJ is much harder than it looks - as the MTV Base cameras will demonstrate – and for every talented individual there are many who don’t make the grade!  Highlights of the programme will include footage of the hot (and not-so-hot!) candidates as they go through the audition process.  And, for a bit of fun, MTV Base put stars Banky W, Basketmouth, Funke Akindele and Brymo through their audition paces too…

The concept of a “VJ” or “video jockey” was created by MTV and revealed to the world on 1 August 1981 when MTV first switched on in the USA.   Only the most talented individuals all over the world have since borne the prestigious title of “MTV VJ”.  Famous VJs through the years include Carson Daly, Daisy Fuentes, Trevor Nelson, Vanessa Mannillo, Jenny McCarthy and Sway – as well as South Africa’s Sizwe Dhlomo and Nigeria’s Cynthia Okpala.

In future episodes:

22/24 January - Episode 2: A select few of the talented, and not-so-talented hopefuls meet the judges Banky W (@BankyW), Toolz (@ToolzO), Funke Akindele (@funkeakindele) and MTV Base’s Tim Horwood (@timohorwood) face to face. The final three are revealed!

29/31 January – Episode 3: We get to know the top three a little better. The judges brief the top three with a challenge; after MC-ing the finale event, their fate will be decided.

FUNKE AKINDELE JOINS BANKY W, TOOLZ AS MTV BASE VJ SEARCH JUDGE

Popular Nollywood actress, writer, producer and director, Funke Akindele (@funkeakindele) has been revealed as the final judge for the MTV Base VJ Search - Nigeria. Entertainment industry veteran Akindele, who recently featured on the cover of Genevieve magazine, will join previously announced judges, Banky W, Toolz and Tim Horwood to select the brand new VJ. The lucky winner of the talent search will become one of the key faces of the music network, hosting programmes on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and on the MTV Base block on STV. “I feel honoured to be working with one of the biggest youth entertainment brands in the world. It is very inspiring to be involved in a project like the MTV Base VJ Search which offers such an exciting opportunity for young people who want to break into the entertainment industry,” Funke says.

Hundreds of young Nigerians have already sent in their online auditions while thousands more are expected to turn up at the MTV Base VJ Search auditions, which will take place on Saturday 1 December at Fantasy Land, Lagos. Superstars Ice Prince, Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy will also be on hand to lend their support to contestants. The winner of the MTV Base VJ Search Nigeria will follow in the footsteps of veteran MTV Base VJ Cynthia “C-Von” Okpala who triumphed in MTV Base’s first ever Nigerian VJ search in 2007.
