Nigeria’s favourite rappers, M.I and Naeto C will make their very first Hennessy Artistry club appearance at Deuces Nightclub this Friday September 28!
This will be the first time both rappers will perform the Hennessy Artistry theme song to an exclusive audience since the release of the track and video in August.
The invite only event promises to be a classic experience for music fans and lovers of the Hennessy brand. The event will also see Hennessy Artistry supporting acts; DammyKrane and Burna Boy perform alongside M.I and Naeto C.

Naeto C says, “We are ready to deliver a world class Hennessy party this Friday so come out and get ready to be blown away!” M.I and Naeto C were announced as headliners for the annual music initiative, Hennessy Artistry on July 20, 2012. Both rappers then went ahead to release the historic Hennessy Artistry collaboration track, “Bartender”. The video for the hit track directed by Clarence Peters has gone on to dominate playlists on TV platforms in Nigeria and beyond.
M.I and Naeto C will get together this Friday, September 28, 2012 for their first-ever public performance of “Bartender” scheduled for Club Deuces in Victoria Island. The all night event promises Hennessy fans a memorable experience. Hennessy Artistry is supported by The Beat 99.9FM, Trace Urban Channel 325, BellaNaija.com and Notjustok.com and Spinlet. Since Hennessy Artistry was first unveiled in Nigeria in 2007, Hennessy Cognac has maintained its position as Nigeria’s and the world’s leading cognac brand. Hennessy Artistry has since evolved from a cocktail-mixing contest between renowned bartenders to a DJ battle, and is now an important platform for experimental collaborations between multi-talented artistes. Previous participating entertainers include Ice Prince, Nneka, Sir Shina Peters, Banky W, Eldee, Tiwa Savage, Jesse Jagz, Bez, Mo’Cheddah among others.
Ginja Tv caught up with Nigerian-German hip hop/soul singer and
songwriter Nneka fresh off her recent tour at Browns Cafe, where she
performed an intimate acoustic set of the stand out track from her
amazing "Soul Is Heavy" album, "My Home" .
Ever since her debut EP of 2005, The Uncomfortable Truth, Nneka Egbuna has quietly built a catalogue of challenging, political soul and hip hop. Best known for her 2008 single Heartbeat, a bittersweet earworm of a hit, her work has been compared to Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. On Soul Is Heavy, her third album, she rises above such shorthand associations.
Set against a 21st century mixture of pop, Afrobeat and RnB, you sense that nobody has made this record but Nneka: intensely personal, deep and beautifully executed, Soul Is Heavy is not the work of focus groups. The title-track – co-written with Talib Kweli – is most poignant, a sucker-punch of Nigerian history delivered in four minutes. As Nneka walks around her country, she reflects on the catalogue of injustices and corruption that has befallen it across the years. She evokes the spirit of martyrs such as executed activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, 60s resistance fighter Isaac Adaka Boro, and Jaja, who founded the Nigerian city-state Opobo. With long-term collaborator DJ Farhot providing beats, it is far from a militant history lesson; Nneka’s charged, socially conscious message is delivered sensuously.
The child-like reggae of J and the jaunty bluebeat of My Home demonstrate her spirituality, referring to a higher power as "her beginning, middle and end," in the face of repression. She questions God’s existence on God Knows Why, which features a blistering rap from The Roots’ Black Thought. Elsewhere, Shining Star is a beautiful, straightforward pop song that, in a different era, could have been sung by the Chic girls or Candi Staton. The mellow waltz-tempo of Do You Love Me Now is all double bass and strings, yet the majority of its listeners would miss its subject matter of oppression. Stay has another killer chorus, and her rap recalls the ornate late 20th century productions of Timbaland and Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins.
For all the surface sweetness of Soul Is Heavy, Nneka comes over as a restless, questioning soul. Restive and confrontational but also undeniably upbeat and commercial, it would be difficult to expect more from a modern political soul record. It's good to hear a new album that brims both with strong opinions and great pop songs, often at the same time.
HIFA, Harare International Festival of the Arts is an annual international arts festival that encompasses five main disciplines: music, theatre, fine arts, dance and spoken word. HIFA began in 1999 and since then has taken the Zimbabwean and Southern African arts scene by storm.
The Festival showcases the best of Zimbabwean performances and fine arts while at the same time staging and exhibiting the most exciting and creative international and regional performances.
One of the international acts for this year's festival is Nigeria's songstress Nneka. She is scheduled to perform at Harare (Zimbabwe) on the 30th of April.
Those with a healthy entertainment palate that made it down to the GET Arena on November 27th for the Hennessy Artistry Halo Concert 2010, were not disappointed. Excitement, elation, fun and pleasure are some modest words that describe the experience of the night. From the red carpet where celebrities like Olu Maintain, Caroline Ekanem, Olisa Adibua and DJ Humility strutted, to the stellar performances by living legend, Sir Shina Peters, Nneka, MI, Ice Prince and Bez, the Hennessy Halo Concert stands out as an event with exceptionally well-thought planning.
To set the ball rolling, popular TV personality, Andre Blaze, came up stage to announce the reason for the gathering. He thereafter introduced DJ Tony Blaze and DJ Rexy, and the two DJs took to their turn tables, engaging in a mild competition much to the delight of guests. If the competition between the DJs was fun, then the next performance gave even more, with talk-of-the-moment producer, Kas, taking to the stage with his popular ‘Fi mi le’ track. That got the audience on their feet, and followed suit with ‘If you wind for me’.
Kas’ performance was followed by soulful guitarist Bez, who took to the stage with members of his band. Though not the regular dance hall musician, guests couldn’t help but ask for more during his engaging set. He performed songs off his new album and also did a remix of Fela Anikulapo’s 'Water'. Bez wasn’t done yet, not until he gave guests a glint of his forthcoming album, performing his yet-to-be-released song, ‘Supersun’.
Andre Blaze, the MC of the night, came back on stage and asked guests what Nigerian song they would they like the DJs to play. Many answers came from different quarters but the shouts for ‘Oleku’ were the most dominant. To this end, Blaze told the DJs to thrill the fans for a while, and not long after, he called Ice Prince onto the stage. Wild applause greeted the Chocolate City artist who took the concert to another level with his tracks ‘Rewind’ and 'Nobody test me', which he performed with M.I and Jesse Jagz. He rounded off with the chart buster, ‘Oleku’, which he performed with Brymo.
Next, Nneka emerged on stage in simple jeans and a t-shirt, and showed guests why her unique talent has made her loved the world over. Performing songs like ‘Conversation’, amongst others, international act, Nneka was on point all through the night. The dexterity of her performance matched with the message of her songs was a plus for her that night.
Nneka soon made way for Mr Incredible who came in and did his thing. M.I, being the crowd-puller that he is, got a wild ovation that heralded his entrance on stage. The audience couldn’t have asked for more as the rapper turned the audience on to his tracks, performing hit songs like ‘Anoti’, ‘Superman’, 'African rapper No.1' and ‘Gold digger’. MI got proof that he was the crowd favourite when he asked the audience who the number 1 rapper was, to which the guests chorused "M.I".
Not finished with the concert yet, all six artists that had featured on the 'Like A Bottle' track came upstage to perform the title song.
Like the proverbial big masquerade that caps every festival, Afro-Juju inventor, Sir Shina Peters re-emerged on stage with members of his band to wrap up the event. He performed songs that had made him the toast of the young, old and middle-aged in his heyday. He however proved that he still knew how to interact with the youth, sending the audience wild with his sensational drumbeats.
The Hennessy Artistry Halo Concert is surely one event that will remain in the memory of those who attended for a long time.
In what promises to be an elegant night of breath taking performances and the last of a series of evens to storm Lagos, Hennessy Artistry will be hosting contemporary soul, R&B, hip-hop and Juju Music in a Halo Concert on November 27th 2010 at GET Arena in Lagos.
The concert will feature the all-star talents of super-star rapper, M.I., soul-music singer, Nneka, fast-rising lyricist, Iceprince, alternative soul guitarist, Bez, ace producer, Kas, and the King of Afro-Juju, Sir Shina Peters, who will all be giving unforgettable renditions of their best-known songs, as well as the Hennessy Artistry ‘Like a Bottle’ title track.
A taste of what is to be experienced on November 27th was dished out on October 30th at Road Runners in Yaba, by Iceprince. The huge turn out of fans were thrilled as the winner of Hennessy Artistry's competition in 2009 ensured they were highly entertained. Speaking on the total Hennessy Artistry experience, Iceprince said - "It’s been very exciting, I am also unconsciously counting down to November 27th. My fans can expect a great performance from me." Another club session was held on November 6th at Auto Lounge in VI, hosted by Bez. Speaking on the show, Bez said, "I started performing around 1am that night and the reception was great. A lot of people loved what we did and I am sure they had a great time." On the Halo Concert on November 27th, Bez said, "I have been getting a lot of calls about the concert, people are greatly looking forward to it. I am also looking forward to performing that night, I am sure it will be a night to remember."
Iceprince and Bez, in preparation for the Halo Concert, will take the stage together on November 13th at D Place, and November 19th at Rehab. The 2 artistes will then converge with Nneka, MI, Kas and Sir Shina Peters on the Hennessy Artistry stage at GET Arena on November 27th.
MI's words on the concert are, "Lagos will be taken by storm that night. I am going to be dropping very hot lyrics. Watch out people!"

Hennessy Artistry’s ‘Like a Bottle’ is one of the most exciting projects to come out of the Nigerian music industry in 2010. Fans of Hennessy cognac and the artistes will have the chance to live the ‘Like a Bottle’ experience in a number of ways.

Last night the 14th MOBO Awards took place at the SECC, Glasgow. Hosted by the charming Reggie Yates and superstar Keri Hilson, the show saw jaw dropping performances from JLS, Tinchy Stryder, N-Dubz, Chipmunk and Keri Hilson. As well as a historic performance from War Child's 'Young Soul Rebels' performing "I Got Soul" for the first time together. The evening also paid homage to the late Michael Jackson, with a moving tribute led by La Toya & Jermaine Jackson.
It was a brilliant year for all who won and for all those nominated. It was a special night for soul diva/tomboy Nneka who took home the Best African Act award following 9ice who took it home last year. We are proud of our Nigerian sister.
The nominees for the 2009 Best African Act were: Amadou and Miriam, Baaba Maai (senegal), Eldee (Nigeria), Femi Kuti (Nigeria), K'Naan (somalia), Lira (south africa), Mujava (south afica), Nneka (Nigeria), Oumou Sangare (mali), and Salif Kelta (mali).
Born in Nigeria, Nneka relocated some 10,000 miles to Hamburg, Germany, at the age of nineteen to pursue a career in singing along side a degree in Anthropology. Having landed in the German port, the singer hooked up with DJ and Hip-Hop beatmaker DJ Farhot and ever since, their strong musical relationship has been the backbone of Nneka’s success. Her influences reflect her younger days in Nigeria as well as her time in the Western world. The distance she has travels shines through in her voice as does her diverse musical influences. She cites famous compatriot Fela Kuti and legend Bob Marley as well as contemporary rappers Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Mobb Deep and Lauryn Hill as key influences in her pursuit of musical recognition.
After finishing her debut EP “The Uncomfortable Truth” she toured Europe, commencing a long live schedule, performing to up to 6000 people at her later gigs, this young talent supported the likes of Femi Kuti, Seeed, Sean Paul and Gnarls Barkley. Performing all over Europe, from her adopted hometown of Hamburg to Holloway Prison in London.
Nneka’s album “Victim Of Truth” was released in September 2006 to rave reviews from the music press. The songs on the album provide a range of sounds from deep soulful ballads like ‘Confession’ to funky Hip-Hop tracks like ‘Stand Strong’ to ‘Changes’, which is a modern reinvention of the 90s UK soul sound.
Despite her Nigerian background, Nneka’s sound is strongly connected with her European journey. “The way they dress, the way they carry themselves, their religion. So many things that are important to me are not important to them. For two years I was overwhelmed.” This difference in ethical outlook comes to the fore in her music, with her social responsibility to her homeland of Nigeria laying heavy on her mind. “I get inspired when I take a severe look at the things going on in our world today; especially in my country. How people live, suffer and endure pain, politics and religion, when I see all that man has evoked and created out of self-centeredness and devotion to material things”.
Nneka’s voice strikes an eerie balance between rage and pain which mirror’s the abrasion of two continents, Europe and Africa, within Nneka’s life so far. Nneka reiterates her humility in the face of her musical talents.
“I do not see myself as a performer but as somebody who shares her heartfelt feelings with others. I have fortunately, by the grace of God, the opportunity to sing my message to you on stage.”
