About PHILOS

PHILOS is the youth-led division of Sons and Daughters of Africa (SADA). SADA is non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation devoted to the unification of African people in the Diaspora and on the African continent.

Mission

At PHILOS, our mission is to promote the availability of the basic measures of economic development for all. This includes quality health care, sound education and adequate opportunities for economic advancement. One of our core principles is to equip prospective beneficiaries with tools for financial independence and a good standard of living. This is best exemplified by the Chinese proverb which goes “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

PHILOS successfully organized its first event title “The Village Square” on October 24, 2009 at the Ethiopian Embassy in Washington, DC. The Village Square was a PHILOS initiative aimed at brining together a group of leaders committed to implementing innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems while drawing strength from a diverse membership that represents a broad spectrum of ideological, cultural and geographical backgrounds. This event focused on three main socio-economic factors: Health, Education & Poverty Alleviation and Human Rights. Another mission of the Village Square event was to discuss the availability of the basic measures of economic development for all.

This includes quality health care, sound education and adequate opportunities. Some of the key participants at the event include; Dr Kofi Agyapong, President of SADA; Michael Henderson, Exec. Member of PHILOS, Mr. Hayden Craddolph, President of Haydenfilms; Mr. Okey Nwoke, Co-Founder, Making Noise, Ms. Yetunde Ibrahim, Secretary of DNPT; Mr. Onabolu Victor, Exec. Member of PHILOS, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Member of MNIST, Mr. Olaoluwa Ibrahim, Exec. Member of PHILOS, Ms. Aminat Williams, Exec. Member of PHILOS, Ms. Kristina Omiloli, Exec. Member of PHILOS and Adenike Akinsemolu, Founder of PHILOS.

PHILOS plan to be involved in a wide spectrum of projects next year. While we anticipate participating in numerous projects and partnerships, we will focus mainly on three socio-economic issues. They are as follows:

Health

Primary health Care delivery

Residential services to Disabled Children

HIV/AIDS Re-education campaign

Diabetes & Hypertension Screening

Breast cancer Screening

Maternal & Baby Mortality

Prenatal Care

Immunization

Education & Poverty Alleviation

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Agriculture

Community Resource Center

National Identity promotion

Human Rights

Gender Issues

Climate Control

We at PHILOS recognize that there is need to revamp and restructure things as opposed to just acknowledging that there are problems. A vision without a goal is a daydream. This ancient Japanese proverb speaks volumes to our commitment to the greater good. Our vision is to promote socio-economic development in the developing world through short-term and long-term projects that will serve to promote national identity. We can’t sit still and dream about a better tomorrow without figuring out steps to guarantee such an outcome.
