SMVA 2010: TRULLY A PAN AFRICAN AWARD

The 2010 edition of Soundcity Music Video Awards (SMVA) which held on the night of November 20 at Eko hotel suites and suits Lagos, proved to be a top rate glamour event and memorable award ceremony organized for the African continent. SoundCity who have been bridging the gap in Nigerian and now African music to the rest of the world took this opportunity to push the bar even higher.

The awards were preceded by a classy and super organized poolside fashion show, with the red carpet covered by Spice TV. The celebrities and celebutants (the “IT” guys and girls of Lagos) had their pictures taken and were interviewed before going to the cordoned off poolside to feast their eyes on glamorous outfits.

As the gorgeous models meandered with style and grace down the all white catwalk which hovered over Eko hotels half Olympic sized pool, it was hard not to feel like you were elsewhere a very classy atmosphere as celebrities mingled and watched the show. The colorful and differing outfits really made an impression and kudos has to be given to the featured African designers including Tiffany Amber, Lanre DaSilva-Ajayi, Dax Martin, Ituen Basi , MAI, Zizi Cardow and David Tlale.The show started after the fashion show and the venue was filled up the regular ticket seats and also populating the VIP section (which for once was at the back upper level of the hall, well spaced and well catered for, with their round tables and white sheets).

The show kicked off with P-Square who came out in their white reflector clad jackets (reminiscent of Michael Jackson) and rocked the stage. Every time their washboard abs where shown the women in the crowd went crazy and then for the guys, the dancing queen of Nigeria “Kaffy” came out to perform with them. Her sexy gold sparkly outfit and tastefully sensual dancing made this one heck of an opening act.

Just as we were all slowly coming down from the hype of the performance Uti came on stage like a space man in a shiny silver suit, covering his whole body. But he was promptly stripped by three models, unveiling his stylish black suit and patented hairstyle. As he went on to announce the start of the show a voice impersonated Big Brother and informed him that his last task was to host the 3rd edition of the SMVAs. He gracefully accepted and with that the show was underway. Many awards and performances wowed and surprised the crowd as the night drew closer to the morning, but to make things easier I’ll put the highlights out there for you:

Sasha’s Performance

Sasha has been in the game for a long time as the self titled “1st Lady” did a fantastic job on stage. Her performance was ushered by Bez who strummed his guitar and serenaded the crowd with the chorus of “Making Money”, followed by the vocals of a talented back-up singer, Sasha came on stage in a cute black “tuxedo-esque” outfit (very reminiscent of Janelle Monae) and rapped, danced and entertained the audience.

Whiz kid The Future of Nigerian Hip Hop

This guy is truly the future of Nigerian hip-hop. After seeing him grow behind Banky W all this time, it’s amazing to see him do his thing in his own right. At such a young age not only does he have musical talent but he is also blessed with stage presence (his “moves” on stage really got people going). His performance was well rehearsed and it all came across so fluidly it had the people on their feet and even boogying in the wee hours of the night. The cheers were louder when the Don Jazzy led Mo-Hits group appeared on stage without Wande Coal. Dr. Sid opened their set introducing D’Prince, and the rest of the team joining them after his most recent hit collaborative song ‘jonzing world’, D’banj completed the set with a performance of ‘Scapegoat’

Funny Highlights:

SMVA 2010 had very funny highlights that ensure the crowd had a laugh, lets start Mr Nigeria’s Slip grammatical blunder When got on stage and tried to entertain the crowd and says “ Let me hear your hands up”, as unplanned as this act was it was hilarious as the audience laughed their heart content.

• Goldie wins award for Best Female Video and as a rep of Kennis is picking up the award, Eldee comes on stage, grabs the mic and uses Kanye’s famous words to Taylor Swift “I’mma let you finish but” and as the crowd laughs with them he gives his thanks and props to Goldie then gives the mic back and walks off.
• During the Mo’Hits All stars performance, an overzealous fan runs on stage to go dance with the stars but is abruptly booted off the stage by one of the bouncers.

Asa’s proved once again why she is a revered entertainer, her performance was a show stopper, showing her emotions with every gesture and when it was time to dance, she reminded people of her roots with her Yoruba dance moves. It was obvious she was having fun out there and it got to the audience as she received a standing ovation. Looking around the crowd you could tell people were spellbound with smiles lingering on faces and general bobbing to the beat, oh and let’s not forget the accents which completed her act… Her outfit, the lovely red shoes and her “never seen without them” “cat” glasses.

Soundcity has once again raised the bar in the Nigerian Entertainment industry as the event was well planned and was certainly the most anticipated event in the whole Africa. It was truly a pan-African ceremony even with the nomination list running long with more Nigerian names and cheers for the Nigerian nominees; which didn’t particularly translate to complete wins as

Ghana’s Sarkodie, South Africa’s JR, Congo’s FallyIpupa, Mozambique’s Tania Tome and South Africa’s Teargas, Jozi, Buffalo Souljah also emerged winners.

An hour before the award ceremony ended, sizeable people traffic built up at the entrance to the New Expo Hall as fans tried to make entry to the already over-capacitated venue. Hundreds of fans still stood beside the seated audience in the 70,000 seat capacity hall.

Timaya was the perfect climax for the event as his performance was saved as the last for the night. Audience via the tube were also present as it was streamed live on Soundcity Premium channel on cable TV platform and responses poured in via comment from followers of the Soundcity Channel page on social networking platforms - Twitter and Facebook.

On the 20th of November, the Expo Hall of Eko Hotel, Lagos was the cynosure of eyes as Lagos, Nigeria, and the world tuned into a lavish celebration of recording and performing artists and music videos.

The soundcity team must be commended for putting together a world class Pan African event, as the detailed planning and execution was obvious at the event. The Buzz keeps growing | SMVA 2010

The much anticipated award of the year is finally here, so close we can feel it, touch it, as the anticipation builds up. The 2010 SoundCity Music Video Awards is set to be a groundbreaking event. With the long list of nominees from all around the continent. Most of the stars on that list have confirmed their attendance. Just a few days ago, man of the moment, Big Brother Africa All Stars winner Uti Nwachukwu was confirmed as the host.

As if that wasn’t enough to get us excited, a major Pan-African couture fashion show has been added to the SMVA agenda. The SoundCity Music Video Awards aims to become the “Ultimate African Awards event” and with the addition of this fashion show, they just might achieve that goal.

On the 20th of November 2010, as notable musicians and celebrities from all around the globe converge to witness the show, there will be added element to excite and dazzle them. According to the organizers, “the award pre-show at this year’s SMVA has been designed to be an altogether different and exciting visual experience quite unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.”

The basic red carpet format will kickoff with a live exclusive couture production at the poolside of the Eko Hotel from 6:00PM – 7:30PM. The show will feature stunning models donning exclusive collections from the continent’s boldest, most accomplished international designers and labels. The fashion show will be directed by Jan Malan and top designers from across Africa have been commissioned to create signature looks for the evening says Olamide Adedeji, Project Director SMVA 2010.

UTI TO HOST SMVA 2010, COME NOVEMBER 20TH

Reality TV star, actor, and model, Uti Nwachukwu, hosts this year’s awards. Uti, a recording artist himself, continues in the tradition of performers hosting the SMVA’s (The 2008 and 2009 awards were hosted by D’banj and Darey Art-Alade, respectively).

Uti will draw on his recent fame and success, having just won the 2010 season of the Big Brother reality show, Big Brother All-Stars. Through that platform, Uti connected to audiences on an unprecedented scale. He has proven himself capable entertainer, and performer – combining his trademark affability and charm with an unforced coolness.

Uti began his career as a housemate on the third edition of the Big Brother Africa reality show in 2008, and was evicted on the 42nd day. He returned to the Big Brother house this past July, and was eventually crowned the winner in October, walking away with the $200,000 prize money. He switched lanes after returning from the first stint on BBA, to launch his singing career, when he released his debut
single, ‘Go Down’, which offered Nigerians his rare blend of Soul and R&B.

David Tlale (South Africa)

Dax Martin (South Africa)

MOMO (Nigeria)
Fati Asibelua has been going strong in fashion circles from New York to London, clothing the most beautiful models and showcasing her homeland. Often described as alluring and contemporary, MOMO has braved the use of traditional patterns and modern shapes. MOMO has everything for everyone from shoes to fabrics and patented accessories.

OdioMimonet (Nigeria)

Soundcity Music Video Awards 2010 hits green light as we confirm the crème of the crop for performances at the upcoming SMVA 3.0 to hold in Lagos, Nigeria, next month. Top-drawer artistes from all around the continent have been chosen to light the stage at the awards ceremony proper; taking place on Saturday, 20^th November 2010 at the New Expo Hall, Eko Hotel, Lagos.

With a line-up featuring A-list entertainers from Nigeria and across the African continent, guests are in for a night of premium performances and top-notch entertainment, a promising a spectacle like never-before. All the big names will make an appearance on the night: wunderkind rapper MI and the Choc boys, Mo hits crew, Psquare, 9ice with Alapomeji, Banky W, Storm all stars, Timaya with Dem mama soldiers, Asa, Dama Do Bling (Mozambique) and Lizha James (Mozambique), Deep level (South Africa), R2Bees (Ghana) and Toniks (Uganda)

Wunderkind rapper MI and the Choc boys will seek to crown out a year that has seen their star rise beyond even the continental stage. The Choc boys; comprising MI, Jesse Jagz, and Ice Prince; are hailed as perhaps one of the most promising rappers in the business, combining creativity and versatility to deliver great music, whether as solo artistes or as a collective. M.I.’s debut album, ‘Talk About It’, is still hailed as one the top albums from this country; Jesse Jagz released his debut album, ‘Jag Of All Trades’, earlier this year; and Ice Prince is touted as one of the most promising acts, and his debut single, ‘Oleku’, is currently on heavy rotation.

The twins have been nominated in five categories, including ‘Best Video’, and ‘Best Cinematography’.

9ice has made a return to the height of his eponymous second album, ‘Gongo Aso’, albeit on the back of controversy. He has, however, ridden the waves of the controversy to with a mixtape and a new album as a follow up to ‘Tradition’ released in 2009. He will be accompanied by members of his Alapomeji crew, including Snow, Wise, Ajayi brothers, and Kayefi. He will, as expected, be bringing the energy, and creativity that have made him a hit on the African continent and the world beyond.

Banky W’s smooth voice, and song-writing ability, coupled with his stage-craft and dance skills have catapulted him into the contemporary music spotlight. He was born in the United States to Nigerian parents, but his talent and showmanship have done him proper justice and made him a top act on the continent, recently producing huge hits such as ‘Lagos Party’ and ‘Strong Tin’ from his second solo album, ‘The W Experience’. Banky W has the highest number of nominations with seven nods, including ‘Best Male’, and ‘Best Video’. He will rock the night with fellow label mates from their Empire, Wizkid and YoungSkales. Wizkid is the young Nigerian sweetheart rocking the world with him debut video ‘Holla at your boy’

Storm All Stars; including Naeto C, Sasha, GT da Guitarman, YQ et al; has been right up there with some of the biggest entertainers on the continent. The collective boasts a healthy number of successful album, and numerous albums between them. Storm All Stars deliver a mixture of the streets, with a forward-themed urban music sense, and are unequivocally labeled ‘international artistes’ recording successes in the country, and on the continent. Though, the Storm All Stars line-up has changed over the years, the core essence of the collective remains strong.

Timaya and Dem Mama Soldiers are easily some of the most vocal voices from the South of Nigeria. Timaya is, without question, one of the most consistently chart-topping acts in Nigeria, boasting three successful albums; ‘My Story’, ‘Gift and The Grace’, ‘The Rebirth’; he has lived up to his moniker ‘Eberi-Papa 1 of Bayelsa’. He borrows heavily from his own experiences, past and present for inspiration for his music, and his crew, ‘Dem Mama Soldiers’, are in that same mold.

Asa’s debut album properly introduced the world to her music, thereby lifting her to the world stage; two years and numerous accolades later, she looks set to revisit previous heights with her new album, ‘Beautiful Imperfection’. The songbird has been hailed as one of the best acts from the continent in this last decade, a honour well deserved. Soundcity TV the mother brand of SMVA is one of the brands of Consolidated Media Associates, a company that has a special focus in producing and syndicating programs across Nigeria. Soundcity TV is the first of it’s kind in Nigeria and has now become a national favourite and a house hold brand name. It has been positioned as a dedicated 24hr music channel who gives the Nigerian artiste a platform of projecting their image, while also contributing positively to the Nigerian music industry.

Speaking with the Executive Producer of SMVA and the MD/C.E.O, Consilidated Media Associates Mr Tajudeen Adepetu who has successfully turned and achieved a 360 degrees turn around in the Nigerian Entertainment industry. He gave us an insight to the birth, growth and maturity of the SMVA awards.

Giving to the society and encouraging the youth has always been my motivating factor says Adepetu fondly called TJ who veered into the music industry as a radio jingle producer and had the opportunity of meeting a lot of upcoming and aspiring artiste seeking for platforms to showcase their talents, and the idea to provide assistance to burdened creative talents which will transcend to a formidable platform the industry will need 10 years down the drain. The business aspect came in later.

The first SMVA was a mind blowing event which was described as a dream come true for the organizers received world wide acceptance by the key players in the entertainment industry and brand acceptance by the general public, with such acceptance it’s no surprise that after 3 years the SMVA brand is still a formidable brand.

It was hosted by Nigerian pop star D’banj and had notable city-diva Ashionye co-host it. The experience was unique on all fronts. The event was transmitted live to over a 100 million viewer’s African audience. The red carpet was full of glitz, pomp and pageantry. It was a night to be remembered for a long time. The event had several international artistes perform. American hip hop star Nas performed and also presented an award to Ill Bliss as the Best Hip Hop Video winner. South Africa’s popular band Freshlyground was also in-town for a spell bounding performance. Tic Tac flew in from Ghana and of course we had performances from D’banj and the Mohits crew, Psquare and more.

Mr Adepetu tells us with nostalgia how humbled and awed he was by the acceptance of the general public, as he recalls that there were no criticism of any kind, which he attributes to the fact that the mother brand Soundcity doesn’t ask for any form of payment from the artiste to air their videos and the equal air time. He suspected that to the industry, that already translates to fairness.

Like every organization in the world SMVA has recorded its own successes and achievements. SMVA is currently positioned as Africa’s biggest music video awards; a feat though achieved hasn’t been without its fair share of challenges. Mr Adepetu and his team have very creative ideas planned for every SMVA held, but the lack of available creative talents to express the ideas as conceived has been one of the many challenges SMVA faces. Not to say that Nigerians are not creative or talented but SMVA will be exploring all options and bringing creative hands and talents from across Africa. Talents who have worked on international events and projects of this creative magnitude. Aside creative interpretation, Sponsorship has been another challenge the SMVA team have faced to execute a world class event as planned. The last awards were supported from the purse of the company thereby limiting the expansion of the brand and the standard set to make it at par with its foreign counterparts.

SMVA has set a standard in the African entertainment industry and as such the criteria for nominations and the awards are based on creative execution and value employed in the expression of that creativity. The criteria for nomination are based on a wide pool of videos depending on the best category fit for a nominated video and then filtered through several screening procedures with various panels that cut across different backgrounds on the basic and core features in the production of a film/music video, various angles are also considered such as Story/Storyboards, camera angles, production, film quality, authenticity and innovative. The winners are subsequently picked by skilled judges who are seasoned professionals in these fields with the technical expectation of the criteria.

ILL BLISS SPEAKS ON THE SMVA

The award came before he even released his debut album, “Dat Ibo Boy” which contained other hits like “Aiye Po Gan.” And as this year’s SMVA draws closer, his advice is for everybody to see himself as a winner.

It’s a good feeling and rewarding feeling to be nominated Pan African in these 4 categories but it came as no surprise to us because of the quality, value and time put into every song, video or album as we consistently strive to bring out quality videos, concepts and ideas and people are glad watching it because we don’t do half measures. Although the credits goes to the director as he is the brain child behind the videos.

SMVA 2010 has incorporated a PAN African approach and this is a laudable feat and gives us a good challenge because we always give the best videos in Africa and without bragging as we have the best concept, quality, originality and videos that can be compared to our foreign counterparts.

Speaking about Danger, an album which has been nominated for various awards, Paul explained the technicality and the procedure used to shoot the video, which he explained as tasking, rigorous and very challenging, the video which was shot in slow motion for every scene and required everyone taking panadol after every 2hrs. With this hard work, it leaves no doubt that Danger was made for SMVA awards because of the technicality.

The criteria for the selection of nominees and winners of the SMVA’s are very technical as it is based on the creative interpretation and value employed in the expression of talent. The dynamic duo believe that they have what it takes to clinch awards because of the time, efforts and creative interpretation of their videos. The Nigerian artiste also know the value of work that their peers put into their videos and as such for a lot of categories the winners are almost known by the stake holders and that is the quality of video’s that P-square does.

Soundcity is Nigeria’s music TV’s top honors and their awards are usually traditionally hosted by A-list musicians including recent comperes Dbanj and Ashionye.

The city of Lagos stood still for the 2009 Soundcity Music Video Awards which was held on August 1, 2009. The Awards was nothing short of fabulous. Event was sponsored by GLO and Dare Art Alade was the compere for the night.
