Sophie Okonedo to play Winnie Mandela in an upcoming BBC drama.


Hotel Rwanda’s British actress, Sophie Okonedo has been cast to play the leading role in a movie based on the life of the legendary Nelson Mandela’s ex wife, Winnie Madikizela -Mandela. Winnie Madikizela -Mandela is famously known for the profound role that she played in the South African history during the apartheid times.

She was the first African first lady in South Africa and is well known for being Nelson Mandela's backbone. Sophie Okonedo, who is to play Winnie Mandela was born in London, England to a Jewish mother and a Nigerian father. The movie is scheduled for release later this year, the Soweto-shot 90-minute film, written and produced by Michael Samuels and Jolyn Symonds.

The surprising thing about this upcoming BBC drama called Mrs Mandela and starring Sophie Okonedo, is that no one has done it before. Her story has everything you could ask of poignant drama – heartache, beauty, tragedy, scandal and high politics. Watch out for it.
