Congolese hip hop king Fally Ipupa has been booked to rock the MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain (MAMA), the annual celebration of African contemporary music, in Kenya. Fally Ipupa will join Best Female contender Lizha James from Mozambique, South Africa’s Da L.E.S, A.Y. from Tanzania and Ugandan gal trio, Blu3 on stage at the Indoor Arena, Moi International Sports Stadium, Nairobi on 10 October 2009.
Fally Ipupa, Da L.E.S, Lizha James, A.Y. and Blu3 join previously announced performers Wyclef Jean, Wahu, Lira, M.I. and Samini at the second annual MAMA awards, taking place at the Indoor Arena, Moi International Sports Centre, Nairobi, airing to a potential TV audience of 1 billion viewers around the world.
The acknowledged king of Congolese contemporary music, Fally Ipupa is a singer-songwriter from Kinshasa in the DRC, who combines traditional Congolese soukous or rumba with Western R&B and haunting vocals to generate a sound distin
ctly his own. Usher-lookalike Ipupa, an electrifying live performer, is as well known for his slick dance moves as his unforgettable voice and will be the first Francophone artist ever to perform at the MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain.
Beginning his musical career at the beginning of the 90s while still a student, Ipupa won his musical spurs as part of various Congolese groups notably Quartier Latin, presided over by celebrated Congolese musician Koffi Olomidé. After 10 years with Quartier Latin, Ipupa launched his solo career in 2006, producing a highly regarded first album, Droit Chemin which propelled him onto the international scene and garnered many international awards thanks to tracks such as ‘Liputa’, ‘Orgasy’ and ‘Sopeka’. A second album, Arsenal de Belles Melodies (A2bm) soon followed suit and included collaborations with Olivia Longott of G-Unit and with Krys on the track ‘Sexy Dance’.
