Herring and Herring goes Tribal

Herring & Herring is a collaboration between Dimitri Scheblanov (Russia/USA) and Jesper Carlsen (Denmark/USA), engaging in fashion photography and art direction. The team’s photographic approach is based upon concept rather than a singular style. Their aim is to continuously push the boundaries of story telling through an ever-expanding visual vernacular.

Herring & Herring clients include: DeBeers, Philip Crangi, Gucci, Alvin Valley, Malin Landeus, BASTA Surf, BornTheBest, Ra’mone-Lawrence, Kouture Magazine, Mirage Magazine, D Mode Magazine, Kurv Magazine, Clear Magazine, Surface Magazine, S Magazine, Zink Magazine, Freestyle Magazine, Vice Magazine.

“Herring & Herring have always been interested and inspired Tribal Art. Jesper had experience it firsthand wile working in South Africa and Dimitri had taken an early interest in Art Brut, African sculptures and artifacts, through the works of Picasso and Matisse, while studying fine art at the Cooper Union.”

These photos were taken in November 2009 for D Mode Magazine. The editorial spread was styled by Laurean Ossori. It features models Mey Bun, Rila Fukushima and Ai-li Wang in striking, multi-hued tribal wear including vivid animal printed dresses, a shawl of long black animal hair, and piles of chromatic chunky beads. Adding to the extreme tribal theme were brazenly painted tongues, face paint, and wooden spears. This remains the best interpretation of the tribal theme in fashion.
