Introducing Tsemaye Binitie

Earliest memories of Versace 80’s madness is what inspired Tsemaye from the age of three to decide that he wanted to dress women and even ‘the world’ in his own irreverently glamorous aesthetic!

Born in Nigeria, Tsemaye graduated from Kingston University London in 2004 after completing an internship with John Richmond. A signature style of un-abashed glamour, perfect cut and attention to detail techniques developed from creating his graduating collection. Spending time on the fashion floor at Burberry as a Personal Shopping specialist allowed Tsemaye the opportunity to handle final product ranges and interact with the clients developing an understanding and sound background within the Luxury goods market.

Gaining a position on the design team at Stella McCartney in 2004, he went on to develop his design skills focusing on tailoring and creating a fully marketable collection. He joined the business at a crucial stage and was in a pivotal position to observe the beginnings of a global luxury brand.

Tsemaye launched his namesake label in 2009. It is a contemporary fashion label characterised by exquisite clothing encapsulating a love of luxury and innovative design. Meticulous cuts, indulgent fabrics and sartorial construction permeate the delivery of sharp, refined and timeless pieces. Each collection features dynamic, draped and body conscious silhouettes with a deep desire to communicate a new sense of elegance and a modern glamour.

The ideal woman will be a modern icon of strength, beauty and glamour. The collections will appeal to her as she has a strong understanding of self, she will appreciate the complex hidden details behind the simplicity of the pieces.

The label launched with its first pre- collection for Fall 09/10 ‘Blackout’, aptly named as he wanted to bring together his idea of the ‘perfect’ little black dresses, each with a very distinct silhouette for a multifaceted woman.

‘In Livin Color’, the spring summer 2010 collection from Tsemaye takes inspiration from his two nieces Uyi and Osai and the understated glamour of Downtown New York. As a designer who had previously worked primarily in black, Tsemaye was excited by the colours in his nieces’ playroom. The bright toys scattered around it and the girls own wardrobe served as a starting point. The collection however is anything but juvenile, it screams sophistication and SoHo chic.

A rainbow of colour darts through a stunning capsule range of dresses and daytime separates. The fabrics, although luxe are intended to be worn not only as precious pieces but with a downtown ‘I don’t give a damn’ feel. Washed silk crepes and chiffon cling to the body in mix of bondage body-con dresses with defined shoulders, contrasting against full length floaty dresses that spill off the wearer and exploding into cascades of colour. Leather, denim and Swarovski studded Tees maintain the collection’s cool factor, again conjuring the vibe of strolling through Downtown New York.
