WASS Cultural Show | Black Angels ~ Olamild Ent

The African students of Wayne State University held their 6th cultural show on Saturday (April 3rd). Activities ranged from fashion, drama, dance to musical selections. Your very own Olamild performed Alicia Key's no one in yoruba (yayyy). The event was a huge success and the highlight of the event were the BLACK ANGELS. These guys were on fire (literally)

OE: You guys were totally amazing up there. I was wowed by your performance.

Black Angels: Thank you.

OE: How and where did the group emerge?

Black Angels: Kenya! All the members of our group grew up in Tiwii Mkoyo, a village in Kenya. Some of us actually schooled together while over there.

OE: Childhood friends huh? wonderful! It's amazing how 5 guys can do that much work.

Black Angels: There's 6 of us (pointing to another guy). He didn't perform because he's injured but he's the best guy on the team.

OE: Wow! You guys did some pretty cool stuffs on stage, those stunts were impressive. Which would you say is the most challenging?

Black Angels: The Pyramid

OE: Which one is that?

Black Angels: The one where we stood in layers and spread out.

OE: Oh yeah that looked hard. How long did it take you to perfect that act?

Black Angels: 2 years

OE: 2 years??

Black Angels: Yes, we had numerous practices. The stunt required trust, strength and balance. We had to make sure the foundation was solid in other to prevent getting hurt.

OE: Wow! So how long have you guys been in the US?

Black Angels: 5 years.

OE: You left Kenya for the US to come showcase your talent. How did people find out about your group though?

Black Angels: When we arrived, no one knew about us. We had to get an agent to help us with the publicity aspect. He created accounts on myspace, facebook and more to make people aware of what we do.

OE: So is this your first time in Michigan?

Black Angels: No, this is our second time in Michigan. We performed last year (2009) during the half time for a Piston's game.

OE: Impressive! I take it that you've toured a lot of states in the United States.

Black Angels: Yes

OE: Of all the places you've been, which was the least favorite?

Black Angels: Alaska

OE: Was it that the people were hostile or what?

Black Angels: No, they were very nice, we just hated the weather.

OE: (laughs) I see. Michigan's weather is not as bad as Alaska's i guess. What do you think of us Michigan folks?

Black Angels: You guys are very nice and we liked the fact that you made us feel welcomed. We hope to come back and stay for a longer period.

OE: Nice! Earlier, you mentioned the hardest act. Which one is the easiest?

Black Angels: The Limbo

OE: The limbo is easy for you because you are professionals, it's not easy for us regular folks (smiles). How often do you get gigs?

Black Angels: Things are sort of slow during winter but it picks up pretty fast in the summer.

OE: I take it that you guys travel a lot

Black Angels: Yes we do. We've been to Italy, Germany, Canada and many states in the U.S.

OE: That is so cool. I've got one last question...just random. You guys are undoubtedly talented, super flexible. You show moves that I believe will attract female fans to you.

Black Angels: Oh yeah, they come to talk to us after our performances.

OE: Of course people will come to talk to you and possibly take pictures but I am referring to female fans that come to ask if you guys are single (smiles)

Black Angels: (laughs) Yes, a lot of our supporters do come out to show interest. The thing is we are very disciplined in our group. Any guy in the group can choose to accept or reject any girl that comes their way. We're nice about it but we really ask that they be 18 and over.

OE: Trying to avoid a law suit uh?

Black Angels: haha yes

OE: haha that makes sense.

Black Angels: Are all the Africans in Detroit Nigerians?

OE: No, it's just that majority of the African students in WASS are Nigerians. We've got people from Cameroon, Togo, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Ghana and more. I know you're asking because you've run into many Nigerians today.

Black Angels: Yes

OE: Well, thank you so much for your time. I'll let you catch up with the rest of the show, picture taking and all. Before I do, is there any other thing you want to share?

Black Angels: We would like to thank everyone for supporting and encouraging us to do what we are doing. A lot of people do what we do in Kenya but we are glad to be here and to see people appreciate what we do. We are here to represent Africa and we pride ourselves in making the crowd happy. That's all. (smiles)
