MoyeenOluwa, is a multi-talented singer and songwriter her sound is an eclectic mix of musical influences from Afro Beat, Reggae, and R&B. Her voice texture is rumored to have hint of contemporary jazziness amidst her up-tempo and head-bobbing beats. However, each listener comes up with a different hybrid of what this songstress sounds like. For now, she opts to be a non-genred musician, by following her creative inclination without genre-boundries. So when asked about her genre she says :
You know, if my music had nationalities then my album would be the
United Nations. So,its up to the listeners; they decide. Besides,
I might be voted into a new genre, reality tv style! Who knows, we'll see.
As a little girl, Moyeen fell in love with music and the arts. She would spend hours replaying songs on her sister's cassette player; learning lyrics and performing right in front of her largest audience: her own reflection in the mirror. She remembers,
"As a kid, I sang into every hairbrush and during every shower. And if ever
I found an enclosure generous with echoes; it was a free concert for
unsuspecting ears. Id sing till I was breathless !!! "
Moyeen, the fourth out of five children was raised in a traditional Nigerian family where respect, family values, and education, most especially, are essential. She always knew she wanted to sing but learned at an early age that to be “successful” she’d have to follow the traditional path of being either a medical doctor, lawyer, accountant, architect, or engineer. So it was no surprise when an aquaintance, who noticed her passion for music, told her "olodo lon korin!" ! Which means “only the unintelligent sing!”.
